DELNET Annual Lecture on “Personalizing Libraries and Their Access”

08th February 2014

The DELNET Annual Lecture for 2014 on Personalising Libraries and Their Access was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Sancheti, President (Vice - Chancellor) Manipal University Jaipur on 08 Feb. 2014 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. It was followed by the introductory address by Dr. H.K.Kaul, Network manager, DELNET, New Delhi.

Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Sancheti referred to the growth of Libraries and use of electronic domain and re-productivity and regeneration of knowledge. Libraries are road of current development and growth. Library personilsing is very important. It means that each person’s experience of the digital library will vary from that of others. The library will produce different experiences, and possibly different answers, for each individual, thus reducing the common experiences and shared references that bind the community together, and increasing problems associated with transparency, divergent interpretations, and training. Even without direct social interaction, a social effect can thus arise from personalization. Sharing information with others creates possibilities for discovery, reinterpretation and discourse. Personalization as the ways in which information and services can be tailored to match the unique and specific needs of an individual or a community.

Personalization can be user - driven which involves a user directly invoking and supporting the personalization process by providing explicit input.

The growing diversity of digital libraries, the communities accessing them, and how the information is used requires that the next generation of digital libraries be more effective at providing information that is tailored to a person’s background knowledge, skills, tasks, and intended use of the information.

Libraries are defined as a set of collections, services, a user community, and supporting technology. Big data is a back bone of libraries. Library access is very important its depend of quality of books and network connectivity. Library is knowledge delivery domain and we are technology driven. Technology is not driven by library. People are hungry for knowledge. He has given some suggestions for the improvement of the present situation of libraries.

1. Better secrecy, privacy due to coding and decoding.

2. Better quality, fonts and colour are easily possible.

3. Controlled access like access for fixed duration or frequency.

4. Faster upgradation or release of newer editions.

5. Library adopts the service like bank.

6. To attract to users for using of libraries.

7. Promoting the effective use of a wide range of good quality information.

The lecture ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. H. K. Kaul, Director, DELNET.
