Day 2: 4th October 2016

While defining disaster, Dr. Roy discussed its serious disruption in the functioning of society, causing widespread human, material or environmental losses which exceed the ability of affected society to cope up with its own resources. He grouped disasters as natural disaster and man-made disaster city example of Bhopal Tragedy and cyclones/tornadoes. He said that natural disaster can be sudden or rapid onset disasters like earthquakes, landslides, forest fire, avalanche and many more. Natural disaster can be slow like drought, deforestation, desertification, land degradation etc.

Day 3: 5th October 2016

Dr. U N Roy started the session with a lecture on technology of sustainable development. The session was conducted by Mr. Shiva Chithambaram, Research Scholar IIT Roorkee. He discussed about climate change due to anthropogenic activities. He said that Industrial pollution, vehicular pollution, huge deforestation and change in natural landscape and increase in CFC gases have been the major factors for increasing the temperature of the earth surface and its atmosphere. It has led to ecological imbalance and many a time reflected in terms of natural disasters like earthquake, flood, landslide, cyclone, drought, forest fire etc. he stressed that manmade disasters like deforestation, epidemic, pollution, industrial accidents, nuclear explosion etc. are the real causes behind its natural consequences. Disaster management has become an important National as well as International issue particularly in context of some highly damaging disasters which has occurred in recent past like Chennai Flood, cloud bursting and floods in Kedarghati and Jammu and Kashmir, Cyclone in coastal regions, earthquake in J & K and Bhuj, tsunami in Indian continent etc.
