FDP on ‘Transforming Teaching Skills : Participant Centered Learning’

 

Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies, Delhi

A One day Faculty Development Program on Transforming Teaching Skills: Participant Centered Learning’ was organized at Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies (MAIMS), Delhi on May 3rd, 2014.

 

Around 45 participants from different engineering colleges across India participated in this program. Ms. Niti Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science represented Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida in this event.

 

The inaugural ceremony of the programme was presided by Dr P.C. Jain, Director, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and Dr. C.S. Sharma, Director, MAIMS. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. N.K. Garg, Chairman, Maharaja Agrasen Technical Education Society.

 

Dr P.C. Jain delivered the keynote address. During his address, he explained the importance of teaching skills. He explained some key parameters of understanding and grasping the content by students with different teaching aids. He deliberated that lecture ensures 3% understanding, reading 10%, use of audio/video 20%, practical demonstrations 30%, group based discussion 50% and finally activity by doing and teaching others ensured 90% understanding. He advocated the change of education model from teacher centric to student centric.

 

The session was followed by an interactive session where in the faculty members of different institutes discussed actual problems faced during teaching.

 

Post lunch session was delivered by Dr. C.S. Sharma, Director, MAIMS. During his presentation, Dr. Sharma presented two tools for active teaching. He explained the concept of Narrative Analysis with an inspiring story of the “Black Sheep Family” as a case study and asked the audience to present a solution for the case study after reading the story. His other tool included a game played with 7 members in each team. He prompted the teams to stand in equilibrium state followed by non-equilibrium and then again equilibrium state. The participants enjoyed this game and discovered the learning methodology behind this.

 

The workshop was an enriching experience for the participants.
