SHORT TERM COURSE

A Short Term Course on Developing Values, Attitudes and Managerial Skills in Teachers was conducted by NITTTR, Chandigarh during 6th to 10th February 2017. The basic objective of the course was to understand the essential values and attitude that are required in a teacher. The workshop was organized at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT. The faculty members of all the departments participated in the workshop which was coordinated by Ms. Gargi Amoli (Assistant Professor, Information Technology) and Ms. Monika Sinha (Assistant Professor, MBA).

Day 1: 6th February 2017

The program was inaugurated by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Wats (Professor and Head Media Centre, Continuing Education Centre, NITTTR Chandigarh). He discussed the objectives of the course and its contents.

Dr J S Saini initiated the first session with a presentation on Technical Education Challenges. He discussed the major challenges faced by technical educations like enrolment of adequate number of students, placement of students and hiring efficient faculty. He pointed out the issue of scarcity of resources in Research and Development domain in India. There was a discussion on the ease of access and availability of the open source tools. He talked about the types of National Skill Development Programs that are being conducted by the Ministry of MHRD.

Dr. Wats gave a presentation on Technical Teachers Role, Competencies and Effectiveness. He started the presentation with the discussion on the problem of inadequacy of teachers and showed a short video depicting the vastness of information present in the world and the role of teacher in imparting the knowledge to the students. Later, the participants gave their views on the roles and responsibilities of a teacher.

Dr. Wats showed another video presentation of Dr M P Poonia, Director, NITTTR Chandigarh on Management Skills. In his presentation, Dr Poonia defined “Attitude”. He gave examples of attitudes of people in society. He also gave real life examples of positive attitude depicted by people in society. He shared highly motivating facts about the challenging lifestyle of an eagle. With the help of an example, Dr Poonia discussed how tasks are required to be executed in a work place. The session concluded with a discussion on the characteristics of a good human being.

Day 2: 7th February 2017

The session was initiated by Prof. Dr. Vidhu Mohan (Consultant & Trainer) with a presentation on Teacher as an Effective Manager- Personality Traits. Prof. Mohan discussed the qualities of a good teacher. There was a discussion on the types of leaders: Transactional Leader and Transformational Leader. She then stated the properties of a transactional leader like contingent reward and management by exceptions. She further stated the characteristics of a transformational leader like charismatic, inspiring, intellectual simulation and individualized consideration. 

The presentation on Teacher as an Effective Manager- Personality Traits was followed by the presentation on Johari Window.  Dr Vidhu gave an overview of the Johari Window.

Dr. Sunil Dutt (Faculty In-Charge Academic Cell, NITTTR Chandigarh) gave a presentation on Motivating Self and Others. He initiated his presentation with a talk on the importance of motivating self. He quoted, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink unless you give him plenty of salt first”. There was a discussion on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The hierarchy includes physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, self - esteem needs and self-actualization needs. Dr Dutt narrated a list of factors that demotivate individuals.  The major demotivating factors discussed included negative criticism, public humiliation and fear of failure. The session concluded with a short exercise in which the participants stated the factors that motivate them.

Day 3: 8th February 2017

Dr Sanjay Kaushik (Director, ICSSR) initiated the session with a presentation on Effective Communication Skills. He talked about the importance of correct feedback. He said that feedback needs to be taken on time. He categorized feedback as Formal and Informal. He stated that every communication has an objective which must be fulfilled. 

Dr Wats gave a presentation on Developing Leadership.  He defined leadership as an interpersonal influence exercised in a situation for the achievements of objectives. He talked about influence and power. He categorised power as Formal and Informal. He then classified leader as Poor, Formal, Charismatic and Good Leader. He defined efficiency as achievement of target using optimal number of resources. He then shared the qualities of the great leaders of the world like M K Gandhi, Napoleon Bonaparte and Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. He also discussed the factors of leadership.

Er Amardev Singh, Assistant Professor, Entrepreneurship Development & Industrial Coordination, NITTTR Chandigarh, gave a presentation on Positive Thinking for Individual Excellence. He initiated his presentation with a discussion on desire. He described the categories of human desire. He differentiated between ambition and desire. Then there was a talk on human relationships.

Day 4: 9th February 2017

Ms. Manjula, Consultant, Transformers Value Creators, Panchkula gave a presentation on Emotional Intelligence. She initiated her presentation by showing a video clip from the movie “3-Idiots” depicting low emotional intelligence of Viru Sahstrabuddhi. She stated that personality is a combination of mental ability and emotional intelligence. 20% of our success depends upon our IQ and 80% depends on our EQ.

Dr J S Saini, Professor & Head, IMCO Department gave a presentation on Entrepreneurial and Risk Taking Abilities for Effectiveness. He started the presentation with a statement, “Entrepreneurship and risk go hand in hand”. He discussed the need for entrepreneurship. There was a discussion on entrepreneurial growth process. He talked about the initial, middle and terminal stages of entrepreneurship. He stated Joseph Schumpter’s definition of entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurship is a creative activity, the entrepreneur being an innovator who introduces something new into the economy, a new method of production not yet tested by experience in the branch of manufacture concerned, a product with which the consumers are not familiar, a new source of raw material or of new market hitherto unexploited and other similar innovations.

Day 5: 10th February 2017

The session was initiated with a presentation by Dr. Sanjeev Sharma on “Interpersonal Relationship Skills”.  He talked about the interpersonal role of teacher. He discussed the interpersonal relationship for an individual and suggested that it is important that an individual maintains his personal identity. He emphasized on improving intra and inter team communication, coordination and cooperation. Participants shared their professional/personal life experiences where in interpersonal communication seriously broke down.

The presentation was followed by course valediction. It was hosted by Dr Wats. The participants of all the institutes gave their suggestions and feedback of the workshop. Ms Gargi Amoli, Assistant Professor, Computer Science & Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida gave her feedback and suggestions to make the workshop more effective.

The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks rendered by Dr Wats. The sessions of the workshop had been very informative and interest - arousing.
