Day 1: 23rd May 2016

The event was inaugurated by Ms. Garima Saini, Assistant Professor, Electronics & Communication Engineering, NITTTR Chandigarh and Dr. Maithali Dutta, HOD, Computer Science & Engineering, NITTTR Chandigarh. Dr. Dutta stated the objectives of the event and then requested the remote centre coordinators to introduce themselves and their Chief Guests. Ms Saini gave a brief overview of the course and requested the participants to attend all the sessions punctually.

Ms. Saini initiated the session with a presentation on “Journey to ITE Radio Systems”. She talked about the evolution towards 3G. She showed the symbol notification for GPRS, EDGE and 3G. Speed of 2G is less than 0.5 mbps, 3G 63 mbps and 4G 300mbps.

The next presentation was on “Cellular Communication” by Dr S.B.L Sachan, Professor, Electronics & Communication Engineering, NITTTR Chandigarh. He initiated the presentation with an introduction to cell. The idea of cellular communication has been taken from honey bee hive.

Day 2: 24th May 2016

Ms Garima Saini initiated the session with a presentation on “GSM Architecture”. She explained the purpose of BSC. She discussed the Base Station Subsystem Configuration. BSC handles allocation of radio channels, receives measurement from the mobile phones, and controls handovers from BTS to BTS. She gave an overview of Switching System. She then discussed Mobile Switching Centre.

Dr. Simranjit Singh, Dept. of ECE, Punjabi University, Patiala gave a presentation on “Small Scale Multipath Propagation”. He presented Basic Wireless Communication System.

Day 3: 25th May 2016

The session started with a presentation on “3G Technologies” by Mr. Daljeet Singh, Telcocrats Technologies. Various releases of the mobile data communication systems were discussed starting with R1 (Release 1) then R2, R3 and R99. He discussed the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). After that, Mr. Kapil Bhutani, Director, Telcocrats discussed the various types of codes used in 3G. He said that scrambling code is used for authentication and channelization code for signalling. Mr. Kapil Butani gave a presentation on “OFDMA”. He initiated the lecture by stating the differences between FDMA and OFDMA. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a form of signal modulation that divides a high data rate modulating stream placing them onto many slowly modulated narrowband close-spaced subcarriers and in this way is less sensitive to frequency selective fading.

Day 5: 27th May 2016

Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor from Dept. of ECE, PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh initiated the session with a presentation on “Upcoming Research Areas in Wireless Communication”. He talked about the advantages of wireless communication: freedom from wires, global coverage, flexibility to connect to multiple devices and instantaneous communication etc. He then discussed the features of wireless communication.

The Course Valediction Session was hosted by Ms. Garima Saini and Dr. S.B.L Sachan. The participants gave their suggestions and feedback of the STC.
