National Seminar on Mathematical Modeling of Some Physical System

Seminar on MMSPS was held on 13th June,2009 at DCE’s Greater Noida Campus. Hon’ble Prof. D. P. Sharma of Indian Institute of Technology Hauz Khas, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and the Key-note Speaker. This event of great academic magnitude was held under the prestigious patronage of Dr. Satish Yadav, Chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) R. N. Sharma, Principal and Convenership of Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Yadav, Dean Academics and H.O.D. Applied Sciences. The Technical Committee comprised of Dr. Anil Kumar, Dr. Ladley Khan and Dr. Mona Bhargava.

Engineers play a vital role in the development and analytical interpretation of mathematical models of physical system for the purpose of designing these systems to perform not only a specific but a tremendous task. They, then, develop an insight into the behavior of the well tried and tested physical system by analyzing those mathematical models. In fact, an Engineer’s success is essentially determined by a sound knowledge of mathematical skills.

There is an enormous body of knowledge associated with mathematics. However, most of the time we only use a very small portion of that knowledge in engineering. For example mathematicians make considerable efforts in finding solution of nonlinear equations. Engineers rarely encounter mathematical models of systems that are nonlinear. Keep in mind that mathematics is only a means of communication. If our mathematical skills are weak or nonexistent, this will get in the way of ultimate engineering or the function of a system to accomplish a desired task. The objective of this Seminar was to discuss only those mathematical models that are often encountered and which must be firmly mastered and deftly handled. The desired outcome of this series was to ensure that audience learnt to “distinguish the trees from the forest” and come away with a lasting and functional usage of this essential mathematical skill.

A sizeable number of participants from amongst DCE’s own Faculty members, apart from participants from other colleges across the State, made an enthusiastic participation and even presented papers of substantial academic significance. The event has gone into the annals of the college
