Commercialization of Technology for Start-Ups and Incubates

8th July 2016

A workshop was organized by CII & MSME at MSME-DI, New Delhi on 8th July 2016 pertaining to IPR and Commercialisation of Technology for Start-Ups and Incubatees. Advisor (R&D), Prof. TPN Singh and students of DGI, Greater Noida namely Sachin Kumar Verma, Pankaj Kumar of ECE and Kameshwar Goel, Ashwani Kumar Rathore, Dron Sharma and Ankur of ME attended the program.

Mr. Anjan Das, Executive Director, CII gave the welcome address. He emphasized on the incubation model change wherein industry driven incubation should take place. Corporate sector should drive and guide innovations. 90% of new businesses are acquired by big companies and hence incubation should be mortgaged to them. He lamented that there are hardly any start-ups in conventional core sector and very few non-IT entrepreneurship. Intellectual property should be mortgaged and monetized.

Mr. R. K. Panigrahi, Director, MSME, Development Institute, Delhi gave the key note address. He stressed on the development of programs for incubatees and incubators. Entrepreneurs must ensure that the ideas incubated metamorphose into a prototype and eventually a useful commercial product. MSME is deeply committed to the Prime Minister’s Make in India Program. The thrust area will be large number of components to be indigenized which are parts of state of art technology systems. This would substantially reduce the cost of items and give a big boost to local entrepreneurs.

Mr. Surendra Nath Tripathi, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner (MSME), Ministry of MSME rendered the special address. Mr. Tripathi said that IPR should be scientifically institute led where innovators do something and keep on doing till the end. Apple Company does not have a factory of its own but is the owner of hundreds of patents. IBM survived because of its IPR. Role of IPR is extremely important in the era of IOT which will revolutionize the way of life. One must try to exit at the right time and go for improvements. Marketing and branding has become an important factor for survival as Apple I-phones with less features and a very high price sells more than a very low priced phone with large features. Not every idea is great but great ideas should not be wasted. Industry led IPR is the best way to achieve success. Standalone IPR is not an attractive proposition.

Sessions were taken on introduction to IPR, Procedure of IP filings, Fundamental of technology licensing, Trademarks and Value of creating brands and Technology valuation strategies. The resource persons were Ms. Shilpi Jha, Senior Legal Counsel for IP, Embassy of USA, Mr. Ashish Marbaniang, Partner, K&S, Mr. R. Saha, Senior Advisor, CII and Mr. Arvind Chopra, VP (Patents), Intrust Globa.

The seminar ended with vote of thanks by Mr. R. K. Panigrahi.
