Workshop on Virtual Labs IIT Delhi

A workshop on “Virtual Labs” was organized by IIT - Delhi on 19thFebruary, 2016 at Bharati School of Telecom, IIT - Delhi. The workshop was organized to provide Engineering and Science faculty an opportunity to get hands - on practice of large number of virtual labs being designed and developed by various IITs and other institutes. There were more than 30 participants who attended the workshop including faculty members from DGI - Greater Noida, DCE - Gurgaon, NIT - Karnataka, NSIT - New Delhi, LCET - Ludhiana and SRM University. Ms. Shailika Sharma, Asst. Prof. (ECE) and Ms. Nisha Bhatt, Asst. Prof. (ME) represented Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida at the workshop.
 

Workshop started with the introduction of the objectives of the Virtual Lab project by Prof. Ranjan Bose, Dept. of EEE, IIT - Delhi. He gave a detail of the learning management system that includes web sources, video lectures, animated demonstrations and self - evaluation. He said that Virtual Lab enables the students to learn at their own pace. He further discussed about the types of Virtual Labs that include : Modeling / Simulation based, Measurement based and Remote Triggered and further discussed the relationship between scalability and closer to reality for Virtual Labs. Prof. Bose emphasized that Virtual Labs are complementary to existing labs and customized to self - learning mode. He further discussed about the national impact of Virtual Labs.

 

During the second lecture, Mr. Tanmay Tarun Das, Outreach In-charge (Virtual Lab Project) gave a brief introduction of Virtual Labs developed for various streams and performed a Virtual Lab experiment on ‘Machine Shop’ under Electrical Engineering.

 

After the tea break, Mr. Prateek Sharma, Field Engineer (Virtual Lab Project) demonstrated DSP Virtual lab under Electronics and Communication Engineering. He showed videos regarding how to use Virtual Lab and Pre - Quizzes before starting the experiment. He also performed Virtual Lab experiment on ‘Kirchhoff’s Law’ under Electronics Circuits.

 

In the next session, Mr. Jithim Lal V.J, Field Engineer (Virtual Lab Project) performed Virtual Lab experiment on ‘Metal Forming’ for the participants from Mechanical Department. He explained how these experiments can be helpful for the students so that they can avoid critical situations.

 

During the last Session, Mr. Bhariab Chandra Patra, Senior Field Engineer (Virtual Lab Project) demonstrated the Virtual Lab under Computer Science Department.

 

All the sessions were very informative and interactive. It was an excellent learning opportunity. Participants interacted with the coordinators to give a feedback and discussed the purpose to facilitate the understanding and concepts in colleges where the state - of - the - art experimentations facilities and infrastructure are not present.
