CII 3rd-NSDC

National Skills Development Center (NSDC), Ministry of Labour and Employment (MLE), Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) all joined hands together to  organize the 3rd National Conference on Skills Development on 28th and 29th November, 2013 - Hotel Lalit - New Delhi.

Ms. Prachi Agarwal from M.B.A department attended the conference along with the students.

DAY 1 – November 28th, 2013

The session started at 10:30 AM with the opening remarks of Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee Director General, CII. He stressed on the fact the development of skills are indeed the driving force of the world economy, particularly to the developing nations like India. It is indeed the highest priority section which needs to be catered to. He stated that NSDC has a target to provide various skills like Carpentry, Handicrafts, shoe making etc. to 500 million Indians by 2022. To achieve this, he highlighted that CII has established 18 Skills Gurukul across many states. CII is working closely with National Planning commission and NSDC to facilitate this. Special attention to states like Jammu & Kashmir and North east states are brought into consideration. Finally, he stated that special attention is given to school drop outs so that they can earn a respectable earning which will ultimately lead to decline in crime ratio committed by Juvenile.

Secondly Mr. S Mahalingam – Chairman, CII addressed the gathering. He stated that the theme of the conference is specially chosen keeping in mind the increasing straight line of growth of Indian economy. Further he stated that there is a paradigm shift in the world economy and India has to work upon keeping in mind the globalization. He further stated that the traditional view to manage the economy has to be completely confiscated by the modern approach. Finally he stated that there are about 21 skill gaps in various workers of the same industry in NSDC.

The third person to address the meet was Mr. Shikhar Agarwal – IAS. He shared various figures like 50% of Arts are Humanities students are unemployed, 25% of science students are unemployed, 12% of engineering students are unemployed. He further stated that the definition of unemployable is often misconstrued by the industry and the people.

Continuing to what Mr. Banerjee stated about skilling 500 million people by 2022, he told that 956 employment exchanges are existing in India in which about 4 crore people are registered and about 4 lakhs gets job every year. He stressed on the point that just like we have marriage portals like Shaadi.Com etc, there should be skill development portal as well.

Post this session, Mr. S Ramadorai, Advisor on skills to PMO, connected with the gathering via video link from Mumbai. He stated that the skill development should become a national movement. Various govt. agencies should partner with Education institutions and NGOs’ to improve the strategy in Skill Development. He stressed on the point that various apprenticeship and Internship programs should be increased both at college level and industry level so that the students can have hands on experience on the working culture.

DAY 2- November 29th, 2013

The theme of second day was, ‘2nd India Australia Skills Conference: Training and Industry – Bridging the Skills divide’.

The session started with the address by DR. S S Mantha - Chairman - All India Council of Technical Education. He stated that there is a desperate need of skill building in Indian Economy and it is becoming a challenge. He told that somehow India is losing respect for people who work by hand. The vocational training and skilling exercise should be imparted to the students from 9th std. itself so that the students will know their area of interest from the very beginning. Funding from all levels, all should come together to achieve this goal.

The highlight of the second day was the words of wisdom by, DR. M M Pallam Raju- Minister of Human Resource Development- GOI. He started his speech by giving example of his recent visit to a government primary school. He stated that he visited the school to inaugurate a newly opened computer lab. While he was leaving the premises, he saw the kids doing PT not in the usual style but in the Gangnam style. This is the extend of Globalization India is facing. He thanked the Australian delegation for the increased cooperation between the countries. There are bilateral relations which are helping both the countries. He thanked the High Commissioner of Australia and CII for their continuous efforts in this field. Also he stated that even the Trainers must be trained properly to impart value education to the students. Various Centre of Excellence has to be established which will increase the level of education imparted to trainers and hence the students. Finally he thanked all the delegates to express their view in this matter. The session ended with the Networking Lunch meet.
