WORKSHOP - DBMS

An important initiative, "Empowerment of Students & Teachers through Synchronous & Asynchronous Instruction", has been taken by IIT Bombay to work with Engineering Colleges across the country, to enhance the teaching skills of Faculty in core Engineering and Science Subjects. Under this project a one week Coordinators’ Workshop was organized by IIT Bombay on Database Management System from 6th May to 10th May, 2013. Professor Amit Sharma from Department of Information Technology represented, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida.

The workshop commenced on 6th May 2013 with an inaugural function. Thereafter, Prof. Deepak B. Phatak (Project Coordinator) of IIT Bombay highlighted the main objectives and the requirements of this project. He also discussed the role and responsibilities of a teacher.

Prof. S. Sudarshan, a man with great stature in the field of DBMS (Institute Chair Professor and Head, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay) was the course coordinator. He covered the following topics very effectively:

1. Overview of Data Management Systems, Relational Model and Query Languages (relational algebra and calculus, SQL), Database Design using the ER Model, ER Diagrams, UML Class Diagrams. Relational Database Design and Normalization. Integrity and Security. Design and development of Web based information systems.

2. Overview of storage structures, indexing. Query processing and optimization, and transaction processing.

3. A brief introduction to decision support and data analysis, data warehousing and data mining and Information Retrieval.

4. Querying Big Data using Hadoop.

The workshop concluded on 10th May 2013 with a valedictory ceremony. Prof. Deepak B. Phatak and Prof. S. Sudarshan congratulated everyone for the successful completion of the workshop and also distributed Certificate of Participation to all the participants.
