Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized AICTE Sponsored Two Week Faculty Development Programme (FDP), The Introduction to Finite Element Analysis during 2nd - 16th May 2015. 50 faculty members from various engineering institutions of India such as Gharda Institute of Technology, Level, Khed, Ratnagiri (MS), Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Gr. Noida participated in the FDP.

 

The objective of the workshop was to familiarize the participants with the basics and applications of Finite Element Analysis.

Valedictory Function

 

Day 1 (May 2nd, 2015)

The programme was inaugurated on 2nd May 2015 at 10:00 AM by Chief Guest Dr. Pulak Pandey, Professor, Mech. Engg. Deptt., IIT Delhi and Guest of Honor Mr. Rajit Kar, Senior Design Engineer, Research & Development, Color Jet India, Noida. In the inaugural speech, Prof. S.K. Bagga Director, DGI Greater Noida, motivated the participants, explaining the need of FEA. Prof. D.V. Bhise gave an impressive talk on the purpose of the programme. Mr. Rajit Kar explained the need of FEA in industry. Dr. Pulak Pandey ended the inauguration session with precise talk on the pros and cons of FEA with different examples.

 

Session I:

In the very first session, Dr. Pulak Pandey, Professor, IIT Delhi shared his experience with the participants about finite element methods and analysis (FEM/FEA). He briefed about various industrial problems such as design of aircraft subjected to fatigue load, design of I. C. engines etc. Dr. Pandey ended up the session mentioning how to optimize the processing of ECSM (Electro Chemical Spark Machining) by using ANSYS.

 

Session II:

The afternoon session was conducted by Dr. K. Tamil Mannan, Associate Professor, IGNOU Delhi. After a brief introduction about ANSYS, the facilitator compared different softwares being used in the industry such as MATLAB, LS-DYNA, HYPERMESHING, COMSOL etc. and also discussed the features of each. He explained in detail on discretization methods, FEM variants and Finite Element Analysis Procedure. He elaborated on Finite Difference Method and general steps of the Finite Element Method and its appriciations. He ended the session by discussing on applications of FEM

 

Day 2 (May 4th, 2015)

Session I:

Prof. Swet Chandan, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Galgotia University, Greater Noida, conducted the full day session. The session started with the explaining of the effectiveness of ANSYS over other analytical softwares. Prof. Chandan started with sharing his experience of various softwares used and described each one of them in brief. The session uncovered the fidelity about the implementation of different element equations such as for Lines, Beams, etc.

 

Session II:

This session was encapsulated with different kind of Meshing Techniques being used in FEA. He explained about a few common types of elements being used in 1D, 2D and 3D problems. He discussed on discretization of different elements and how refinement is done in different meshing system.

 

Day 3 (May 5th, 2015)

Session I:

Dr. Mukul Shukla, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, MNNIT Allahabad, conducted the full day session. Dr. Shukla started the session with a brief Introduction of tools like ANSYS, MATLAB, HYPERMESHING and so on being used in industry, research and developments. He explained the concepts by questioning as Why use ANSYS? , What are the analysed to which one should go for ANSYS or ABACUS .He ended up the session with the implementation of different element equations for Lines, Beams, etc. for making analysis of different displacements and forces acting on a body.

 

Session II:

During the afternoon session, discussions on concepts of one dimensional and two dimensional problems, the formulas and derivation being used in FEM, were held.

 

Day 4 (May 6th, 2015)

Session I:

Dr. Mukul Shukla, conducted the full day session. He delivered brief on how to find whether a component is under-designed or overdesigned and whether the material being used in design is satisfying all the characteristics. He continued with problems after explaining direct stiffness matrix, convergence study and selection of mesh.

 

Session II:

In this session different numerical examples were solved for bar element, truss element and beam elements by using finite element technique. He thoroughly clarified how to populate the stiffness matrix, how to invert the matrix for calculating the displacements. A truss was also analysed using ABACUS software, with procedure as Pre-processing, Solve and Post- processing.

 

Day 5 (May 7th, 2015)

Session I:

Mr. Ashit Pawar, CAD/CAE Engineer, CADD CENTER, conducted the full day session. He started the session with introduction to CAE. He discussed the general working of FEA, stiffness matrix, Boundary conditions and element shapes. He presented an overview on general procedure to conduct FEA, FEA software with key assumptions in FEA. He delivered an introduction to ANSYS workbench which included working on a project and Units in ANSYS workbench. The session ended with practice of examples given on ANSYS software.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session, Mr. Pawar explained meshing. He demonstrated on meshing of plate with holes. He explained on system about generating the mesh, optimizing the model and generating local mesh with examples. The session ended with practicing of all the discussed examples on ANSYS software.

 

Day 6 (May 8th, 2015)

Session I:

Mr. Ashit Pawar, CAD/CAE Engineer, CADD CENTER, conducted the entire day session. He started the session with introduction to static structural analysis. He continued on to discuss general working of pre-processing, solution, post-processing. He delivered an overview on static structural analysis of cantilever beam and plate with a central circular hole. He explained with examples, the plate with a square slot, pressure vessel and bracket. The session ended with practice of examples given on ANSYS software.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session a typical exercise problem was solved using ANSYS software.

 

Day 7 (May 9th, 2015)

Session I:

Dr. Narayan R. Chandak, Professor, NIET, Greater Noida conducted the session on fundamental concepts of FEM and presented of numerical methods. He further discussed the discretization concept and process involved in FEM problem solving. He discussed a brief on SAP 2000 and explained the analysis of truss. The session ended with resolution of 4 bar truss element and frame structure example manually and compared its results by solving it in SAP.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session few exercises were resolved on SAP software.

 

Day 8 (May 11th, 2015)

Session I:

Mr. Ashit Pawar, CAD/CAE Engineer, CADD CENTER, conducted the full day session. Mr. Pawar started the session and an precise talk on static loadings of ductile and brittle materials with some examples. He demonstrated on fatigue loading of ductile material with some examples. He briefed on concepts of surface and line model. The concept includes solving of examples on sheet with circular hole-plane stress, pressure vessel, bracket and line body model. The session ended with demonstration of modal analysis of simply supported beam and cantilever beam.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session few exercises were resolved on SAP 2000 software.

 

Day 9 (May 12th, 2015)

Session I:

Mr. Ashit Pawar, CAD/CAE Engineer, CADD CENTER, conducted the entire day session. He started the session and an attractive talk on thermal analysis and its types with some examples. He demonstrated steady state thermal analysis of car disk brake rotor and heat sink examples. He briefed about concepts of transient thermal analysis of piston on. The session ended with discussion of differences in results of steady state and transient state example problem in ANSYS.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session demonstration was assumed on the concept of thermal stress with uniform temperature change problems. The session ended with hands on practice of all the concepts discussed in previous session on ANSYS software.

 

Day 10 (May 13th, 2015)

Session I:

Mr. Aviral Mishra, Ph.D. Scholar, IITD, conducted the entire day session. Mr. Mishra started the session & presented a detailed talk on FEM-Numerical solution approximation of differential equations. He resolved 1-D problem of bar with weak formulation to calculate numerically. Mr. Mishra delivered an overview on assumptions and equilibrium equation of plane stress and plane strain. The morning session ended with problem resolution of plane stress plane strain problems.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon, session started with weighted residual technique and Galerkin method. The session ended with numerical problems solvation on triangular element, rectangular element by considering force/traction, boundary condition.

 

Day 11 (May 14th, 2015)

Session I:

Prof. (Dr.) Vinod Yadav, MNNIT, Allahabad conducted the full day session. Prof. Yadav started the session on introduction to manufacturing and classification of manufacturing processes. Prof. Yadav continued his discussion on introduction to mathematical modelling, approaches and its applications. Prof. Yadav overview on FEM based modelling which includes finite element formulation using Galerkin’s weighted residual approach.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session Prof. Yadav discussed on solution finding techniques using FEM. The session ended with machining application examples on EDSM, LBPD and EDDG.

 

Day 12 (May 15th, 2015)

Session I:

Prof. Dr. Ramesh Gupta, Shiv Nadar University conducted the full day session. He started the session by generous clarity on basic ingredients of structural analysis. Dr. Gupta continued his discussion on governing equations: 3-D Stresses and strains. He passed an overview on governing equations on 3D/2D kinematics. He ended the session with description on minimum potential energy theorem and Rayleigh Ritz theorem.

 

Session II:

In the afternoon session Dr. Gupta discussed the concepts like principle of virtual work and FE formulation for 3D elastic linear statistics. Dr. Gupta briefed on computation of element matrices and vectors. Dr. Gupta simplified on mapping of elements. The session ended with explanation of a problem in MATLAB software.

 

Day 13 (May 16th, 2015)

On the last day of the FDP Prof. (Dr.) P. M. V. Subbarao, Professor, Deptt. of ME, IIT Delhi delivered lecture on computational Engineering and Analysis of Flow through Ejectors. Prof. Subbarao highlighted importance of Computational Engineering in Research and also in the area of Development of new products.

 

The valediction function of the FDP was held on 16th May, 2015 under the presence of honorable chief guest Prof. (Dr.) P. M. V. Subbarao.

 

Prof. D.V.Bhise, Head Department of Mechanical Engineering said that participants have garnered in depth knowledge on selection of FEM for specific application. Prof. Bhise summarized the complete FDP program and further added that the deliberations of the FDP will help participants in teaching Finite Element Analysis to students effectively. Prof. (Dr.). S.K. Bagga, Director, DGI appreciated the participants by mentioning their passion in learning and practicing FEA. During valediction participants expressed their feed-back about the FDP on FEA and certificate of participation were awarded to them by the chief guest.
