“CAN INDIA BECOME AN INNOVATION POWERHOUSE”

(NATIONAL LEVEL DEBATE COMPETITION)

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI)

New Delhi, 17th April 2013

A National level debate competition was held at Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), New Delhi on 17th April 2013. Twenty colleges including IIT-Delhi, Delhi Technological University, Amity University, JamiaMiliaIslamia, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida, IIMT, Rukmini Devi Institute of Advanced studies, Skyline Institute of Engineering and Technology, Noida Institute of Engineering & Technology etc. participated in the event The topic of the debate was “CAN INDIA BECOME AN INNOVATION POWERHOUSE”. The program was organized by FICCI under the aegis of Intellectual Property Office and Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

Two students, Mr. Harshit Pundhir and Sayani Chakraborty from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida were selected to represent the Institute after screening via qualifying rounds held at the College. Prof TPN Singh, Advisor (R&D) attended the event along with the students at FICCI House. The event was conducted by the IPR division of FICCI.

The jury panel comprised of :

1. Ms. Sheetal Chopra – Head IPR, FICCI

2. Dr. V. Rekha – Controller of Patent and Design, GOI

3. Dr. Manju Pathak – Professor, Amity University of Bio-Technology and inventor

4. Mr. R. K. Gupta - Advisor (CSIR) and Head (IPMD),GO

5. Mr. Hitesh Barot – Senior Vice President (IPR), General Electric

6. Dr. Kavita Taunk – Head IPR Division, Min of Commerce

Mr. Deepak Arora anchored and conducted the program. While inaugurating the program Ms. Sheetal Chopra dwelt upon the importance of innovation leading to entrepreneurial excellence. She said that the student community the world over are the harbingers of new researches providing scientific and technological breakthroughs resulting in making the planet a wondrous place for existence. There are countless examples of young minds deviating from the trodden path and discovering/inventing novelties of gargantuan proportions. Encomiums were heaped on Indians who with their singular purpose achieved the impossible like Vinod Dham (inventor of the Pentium chip), Sabeer Bhatia (founder of Hotmail), Sam Pitroda (Telecom wizard and inventor par excel lance), Vinod Khosla (co-founder of Sun Micro systems), Bombay Dabba walas etc. The last decade has seen immense contributions from students in areas of innovative research and findings. Out of box thinking is the order of the day and the present youth are lucky to be the bastions of society. One should always remember that innovative ideas drive global competitiveness.

During the First Round each speaker had 2 minutes to speak. Out of 40 speakers 12 were shortlisted for the second round.

The 12 shortlisted speakers had to speak extempore during Second round for 2 minutes against their original stance i.e. If one has spoken in favour of the motion in the first round, he or she had to speak against and vice-versa. 6 speakers were shortlisted for the third and final round.

The Final Round was rebuttal. Three groups were formed of two speakers each. Each group had to go to stage and rebut each other after which the jury interacted with them.

Sayani spoke for the motion. She perspicuously brought out the strengths of India in terms of tangible and intangible resources, attitudinal change in present generation youth, changing education system, mind-set of parents, support system of family and peers and the illustrious heritage and lineage of Indians. She lamented on the brain drain and how fertile Indian brains are irrigating alien pastures. However, the reverse flow has now started and the prodigal Indian is returning to his womb.

Harshit spoke against the motion. He was critical of the school education system churning out formatted and designed students devoid of creative thinking and not used to explore the unknown realms. The structured and navigated upbringing of children (for the future) at Indian homes restrains the young minds to pursue their passions killing creativity. All that is required by the parent is to score high grading, enter engineering/medical college, get a job with a fat pay cheque and settle down to a routine and mundane life. He blamed the bureaucratic system for dis- enchantment fostered on budding innovators with their time delaying tactics and red-tapism. Both the students spoke impeccably and were shortlisted for the second round. In similar fashion they gave a stellar performance and were selected for the third round. In rebuttal they acquitted themselves most gracefully and were the cynosure of all eyes. The jury members interacted with the contestants and had meaningful discussions. Finally satisfied, the jury went in a conclave and delivered their verdict as follows :-

1st position

Kanav Gupta, IIT, Delhi

2nd position

Sayani Chakraborty Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida

3rd position

Harshit Pundhir Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida

The participants were presented with a certificate by FICCI on behalf of Ministry of Commerce. The winners will be felicitated with a trophy and cash prize on 26th April 2013 at FICCI in a glittering function to be presided over by Mr. Anand Sharma, Honorable Union Minister of Commerce, GOI followed by an IPR workshop.
