Guest Lecture on ‘Thermal Power Plant Design’

November 3rd, 2014

A Guest Lecture was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering on Thermal Power Plant Design on 3rd November, 2014 at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida. The resource person for the lecture was Mr. Murugu Magaranthan, General Manager, Alstom India Ltd. The program commenced with introduction of the guest speaker to audience by Prof. D.V. Bhise, HOD, Dept. of ME, DGI Greater Noida and presentation of bouquet by Dr. M.S. Murali, Director, DGI, Greater Noida. The Director welcomed the guest speaker and advised audience to take advantage of the occasion to share and attain practical knowledge of power plant design.

Mr. Murugu Magaranthan started the session by giving an overview about his company as a company offering full range of products and services for power generation, transport and transmission sector. He shared that Alstom is a leader in clean technologies for all types of fuel including gas, coal, hydro, nuclear, solar, wind, etc. Mr. Magaranthan discussed the current scenario of utility power generation and overview of coal power plants fired and different technologies used.

He explained the methodology for estimating the power produced in central, state and private sectors with facts and figures. He took time to clarify how the power was getting generated from different sources like thermal, hydro, RES and Nuclear. Mr. Murugu then discussed the parameters needed to differentiate projects like Mega (2000MW) and Ultra Mega (4000MW) projects and gave deep understanding on the technology to be adopted , Sub critical, super critical and ultra-critical to maximize the power produced. He also illustrated the required material properties, pressure and temperature values that need to be maintained at normal and peak load conditions.

He went on to explain the properties of coal and its effective use in detail. Then an interactive discussion went on by giving details of coal, furnace oil, water, needed for a plant it with information on managing CO2, So2+No2 and ash. He also discussed life –cycle emissions and explained 'power island flow diagram’ with detailed overview of turbine, condenser, bled steam and deareator. The session ended with overview of air pollution control systems followed by question and answer session.

The guest lecture was lively and interactive. The students took keen interest and discussed their queries in question & answer session. The lecture was quite beneficial to the students and they enriched their knowledge with practical design parameters considered in a big power plant design.
