Smarter Planet Challenge : Project Competition

December 31st, 2013

IEEE and IBM sponsored a Project Competition titled Smarter Planet Challenge. IBM - IEEE provided students with an opportunity to bring some of the world’s most compelling social and commercial challenges into the classroom.

Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida IEEE Student Members participated in the competition. They formulated two teams for this competition comprising a total of 7 students from B.Tech Information Technology - 5th Sem. Each team had a guide to supervise during the competition. The competition was held On-line.

Team: 1

Members: Rajan Kumar, Mitesh Pant, Sadaf Noor .

Project Name: An Intelligent Traffic System “A Brisk Pace For Society”.

Branch/semester: IT Vth-Sem.

Theme of the Project:-

Project Title: An Integrated Intelligent Traffic System: A Brisk pace for society Traffic congestion is caused by large number of vehicles. The delay of huge traffic is due to the hard coded traffic lights that work on fixed time calculation and do not consider the traffic strength of important vehicle (Ambulance, Firefighter, Police, VIP etc.) that need to move faster than others in heavy traffic. In this project, DGI Students optimized the issue to provide better space for important vehicle in huge jam traffic ‘To save life’ ‘To better police service’ ‘To better firefighting service’ and other important government issues in metropolitan cities.

Team: 2

Members: Hemendra Jha, Naveen, Praveen Singh, Naveen Pundir.

Project Name: System , Method and Device for Control and Optimization of Intelligent Home Appliances.

Branch/semester: IT Vth-Sem.

Theme of the Project:-

Project Title: System, Method & Device for Control and Optimization of Intelligent Home Appliances.

Intelligent Home Technology consists of devices or appliances, which are receivers and the means of controlling the system such as keypads or remote controls which are transmitters. If one wants to turn off an electrical appliance in a room, the transmitter will generate a message in numerical code which includes:

1. A code which contains actual command ‘turn off’.

2. An alert message to the system that it is issuing a message.

3. An identifying unit number for device that receives the command.

These are designed to happen within a second, but it does have some disadvantages. Communication over the electrical lines is not reliable as the lines get ‘noisy’ from powering the other devices. Instead of going through the power lines, systems can also use radio frequency waves to communicate.

A total number of 126 quality projects were submitted from over 29 countries around the world. The result was declared on 20th December, 2013.

DGI, Greater Noida participants received their Certificate of Participation on 31st December, 2013.
