Industrial Visit

 

Indian Oil Corporation, Mathura Refinery

An industrial visit of 33 students was organized by Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 25th March, 2014 for its students to India’s second biggest Oil Refinery namely Indian Oil Corporation, Mathura Refinery. They were accompanied by Ms. Niti Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Mr. Divyanshu Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The students that visited this refinery were from different engineering disciplines Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Masters of Computer Applications.

 

Mathura Refinery, the sixth refinery of Indian Oil was commissioned in 1982 with a capacity of 6.0 MMTPA which has now been increased to 8.0 MMTPA to meet the demand of petroleum products in north western region of the country which includes the National Capital Region. Mathura Refinery is the first in Asia and third in the world to receive the coveted ISO-4001 certification for Environment Management System in 1996.It is also the first in the word to get OHSMS certification for Safety Management in 1998.The refinery is located along the Delhi-Agra National Highway about 154 km from Delhi.

 

On arrival the students were provided with refreshment at the Training Center, Mathura Refinery. The visit started with an address by Mr. S. Acharya, Chief Manager, Training & Management Services, Mathura Refinery who welcomed the students and urged them to avail this opportunity to develop their knowledge about the working of the Oil and Petroleum Sector. The students were then shown a short film on Mathura Refinery where the students were given an insight on the process areas of the refinery and the safety measures to be followed during the visit. Mr. Ankur Aggarwal, Deputy Manager, Process, Mr. Kapil Mathur, Officer, Management Services Mr. Bhuwanesh Sharma, Deputy Manager, Management Services accompanied the students during the entire visit.

 

This was followed by a visit to the Quality Control Department where Dr. (Lt.) Amit Mishra, Sr. Quality Control Officer explained about the various norms and measures practiced by IOCL to produce and supply A Grade fuel to its customers.

 

He also explained Octane number and Cetane Number to the students and how they affect the quality of the fuel produced.

 

The students also visited the Distillation Column where they got a glimpse of Crude Oil wells and how this crude oil is processed to obtain useful products such as petrol, diesel, naptha etc.

 

Then the students were shown some major processing units such as Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU), Vis-Breaker Unit and Bitumen Blowing Unit, Continuous Catalytic Reforming Unit (CCRU)- for production of Unleaded Gasoline, Diesel Hydro Desulphurisation Unit (DHDS)- for production of HSD with low suphur content of 0.25% wt.

 

They also gained an exposure on the working of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) in monitoring defects in Oil pipelines.

 

The last leg of this visit was an excursion to the Ecological Park which is spread across 4.45 acres and is a thriving green oasis in the heart of the sprawling refinery. The park was a scenic beauty which houses a number of migratory birds such as Siberian Cranes, Croatian Woodpecker etc. Mathura Refinery has planted 1.67 lakh trees in surrounding areas including refinery and township and 1.15 lakh trees in Agra region around Taj Mahal.
