Workshop on

Innovation in Engineering & Technology

Mahamaya Technical University, Noida

9th July 2013

Workshop on “Innovation in Engineering & Technology” was organized by Mahamaya Technical University, Noida on 9th July 2013 in its conference hall. Prof. TPN Singh, Advisor (R&D) represented DGI, Greater Noida at the workshop.

Dr. Dipankar, a leading Innovator Engineer, Scientist and Professor at IIT, Mumbai conducted the workshop. He is a pioneer in “cutting edge technology” areas such as Scanning Probe Microscopy, Ultra-fast Femto second Lasers and Electronics Design. He has his own Research Lab “Tree Lab Foundations” at IIT, Mumbai and has many significant inventions to his credit. He excels in the area of energy efficiency and has invented large number of extremely high energy efficient products.

Prof. Kak, Vice-Chancellor, MTU, introduced Dr. Dipankar and commended him for the colossal work achieved by him at such a young age. He said, “India needs innovation and inspiration must be drawn from the likes of Dipankar”. He stressed that our greatest setback is of not working together and leading a life of professional isolation resulting in excruciating pain rather than pleasure of accomplishments. We have created problems but offer no solutions and this does not augur well for posterity. He goaded the audience to share Dipankar’s passion for creating something new which could be passed on to students. “Students thoughts need a spark for ignition to solve the country’s problem which is beset with traditional beliefs and vintage technology”, he said.

Dr. Vishnu Dusad, a pioneer in software development and main architect of Nucleus Software, Noida was enamored by Dipankar’s innovative skills and entrepreneurial ventures. He expressed his gratitude to Prof. Kak for the workshop and providing a platform to Dipankar. He informed that “Tree Lab Foundations” set up by Dr. Dipankar at IIT, Mumbai is churning out entrepreneurs of high caliber who will definitely glorify India in the days to come.

Dr. Dipankar mused that our country is hardly producing any technology. The markets are flooded with items made in US, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, etc. but none from India. Despite being one fifth of the world population our contribution to Science & Technology is nil. He lamented on the working of Business houses who are intrinsically borrowing technology (and not being creative) but nevertheless doing good business. Dipankar has made an effort to offer an algorithm- a human approach to Science and Technology to change the world. His Tree lab foundation has essentially three doctrines:

1. Invent the inventor

2. Create the entrepreneurs

3. Share benefits known as Commons

Hard work, sincerity and passion is required for achieving one’s dreams. Great ideas originate in the muscles meaning hard work and total devotion. The energy must be focused to empower young people. Hard and systematic work leads to entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is contribution to society and personal wealth accruing is by default. The sterling examples are Andrew Carnegie who created steel and Arthur Rock, father of Venture Capitalism who nurtured companies like Apple, Intel. Fairchild etc. There is no line of business in which success is not achievable.

Dr. Dipankar emphasized that creativity, technology and entrepreneurship should go together. Inventions are useless if they do not reach society. Only 1 in 2000 are successful entrepreneurs due to start up’s working in isolation. The objective of Tree Lab foundation is to bring inventors, entrepreneurs and commons together. Thereupon he exhibited his innovative products namely arc welding machine and fluorescent lamp. Arc welding machine weighed only 2 kg replaces a 200 kg machine and consumes a fraction of power. The lamp was consuming only 40 % of the power of an LED.

Treelab foundation of Dr. Dipankar is a section 25 company whereby all rules are applicable as of a normal company but there are no shareholders.

Prof. Kak appreciated the unique work of Dr. Dipankar and gave him a standing ovation. He agreed that entrepreneurship is all about creating wealth for society and not for individual fortune. After the question answer session the workshop came to an end.
