Two Week ISTE Sponsored Main Workshop on Computer Programming

June 16th - 21st, 2014

   

A Two Week ISTE Sponsored Main Workshop on Computer Programming under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India) was conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and organized at Dronacharya College of Engineering, Greater Noida during 16th – 21st June, 2014.

 

26 faculties from DGI as well as from different engineering colleges participated in this workshop.

 

Prior to the face to face interaction from June 16th to 21st, 2014 participants completed the one week equivalent online feedback surveys and assignments through the Moodle Platform.

 
 

June 16th, 2014

The event was orchestrated by Dr. Kannan Moudgalya, Professor, Computer Science Department, IIT Bombay. He enlightened the participants with the mission and objective of The National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technologies (NME-ICT). Dr. Abhiram Ranade, Professor, Computer Science Department, IIT Bombay relinquished a talk on “Teaching Introductory programming course”. He explained how to train first year students and suggested to take programming examples from various domains to excite wider range of students. He instigated Code::blocks simple cpp an open source tool for computer Programming and described how to handle graphics using Simple CPP. During the lab session all the participants executed and uploaded the assignments on Moodle.

 

June 17th, 2014

The first session was on “Introduction to Active Learning” by Prof. Sridhar Iyer. In Active learning strategy he explained “Think-Pair- Share Technique”, Peer instruction using clicker on Aakash Tablets and flipped classroom approach. He further emphasized to implement this approach in classrooms. In the lab session participants performed a Think- Pair- Share activity given on Moodle.

 

June 18th, 2014

Dr. Deepak Phatak delivered a lecture on “A Different way to introduce Programming & Recreating lectures with activities and quizzes” for use in a flipped classroom. He explained the concepts of Arrays, Multidimensional Arrays with reference to image processing. Subsequent to this participants were given quizzes through Aakash tablets and all the participants answered quizzes and responded to opinion polls.

 

Mr. Praveen Prakash, JS (Tel), Mission Director, NMEICT, MHRD, Govt. of India, visited Dronacharya College of Engineering, Greater Noida. He addressed all the remote centers through A-View and praised Dr. D. B. Phatak and his team for their great efforts towards MHRD projects .He further communicated with the participants attending the workshop at Dronacharya College of Engineering and asked their opinion on the grading system of engineering colleges in India.

 

Lab-session was about practicing the concepts taught in theory. The assignments given to the participants helped them to have hands on experience and practical insight into Computer Programming.

 

June 19th, 2014

In the first session Prof. Deepak Phatak explained the ways to model assignments, quizzes, and question papers for computer programming. He further discussed recursion using Hemachandra’s problem. He also emphasized on the significance of use of Visual Communication Skills. He emphasized on the effective use of text and graphics in presentations. In the lab session participants were asked to explore the sample questions and their solutions uploaded on Moodle.

 

June 20th, 2014

In the first session Prof. Deepak Phatak delivered a talk on “Dealing with string and pointers”. He further explained the concepts of file handling and discussed how to create text and binary files. In the lab session participants explored file handling functions and sample programs based on files and submitted assignments on Moodle.

 

June 21st, 2014

In the first session Dr. Deepak Phatak began with 'An alternate approach to present programming'. He presented programming idea by utilizing an enlivened character 'Budhu Dumbo'. He emphasized on using animations and videos during lectures to excite the enthusiasm of learners in this field. Dr. Deepak Phatak invited feedback by participants from selected Remote Centers.

 

During Post lunch session an Online feedback form for individual participant was uploaded on Moodle. All the participants filled the feedback form through Moodle.

 

The workshop was very informative. The laboratory sessions helped the participants in understanding the concepts in a better way. They appreciated the arrangements made by the organizing committee, and they also looked forward to participating in more such workshops to be conducted in future.

 

Valedictory Session was held with the opening remarks of our Director, Prof. (Dr.) M. S. Murali. He expressed his desires to the participants that he wished to see the knowledge and information gathered by them during the workshop to be transferred to students.
