National Workshop on OpenGL

A one day National Workshop on OpenGL in collaboration with Indian Society for Technical Education was organized at ITM University, Gurgaon on 24th October 2013. A total of 52 participants including faculties, research scholars and students from different engineering backgrounds attended this event. The workshop mainly focused on application development in OpenGl.

OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a cross-language, multi-platform application programming interface (API) for rendering 2D and 3D computer graphics. The API is typically used to interact with a Graphics processing unit (GPU), to achieve hardware-accelerated rendering. OpenGL was developed by Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) in 1991 and released in January 1992 and is widely used in CAD, virtual reality, scientific visualization, information visualization, flight simulation, and video games. OpenGL is managed by the non-profit technology consortium Khronos Group.

The first session was conducted by Mr. Prakhar Jain, Core Engineer-Graphics at VizExperts. He gave a brief introduction on the architecture of Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) and how the graphics industry has evolved from a very primitive architecture to the modern day GPU’S being built by giants like Nvidia, Radeon.

The second session was conducted by Ms. Shilpa Mahajan, Associate Professor (CSE) ITM University where she demonstrated and taught the participants how to use basic graphic primitives in OpenGl. She illustrated the use of these basic primitives such as points, lines etc to create more complex objects like polygons, spheroids etc.

The final session gave all the participants a hands on practical experience on the use of Blender & Autodesk Maya. Blender is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games whereas Autodesk Maya commonly shortened to Maya, is 3D computer graphics software that runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux, originally developed by Alias Systems Corporation (formerly Alias|Wavefront) and currently owned and developed by Autodesk, Inc. It is used to create interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, TV series, or visual effects.

The workshop came to an end with the distribution of certificates to all the participants.
