Report on

Aakash Android App Development Workshop

8th August 2013

A One day workshop on Aakash Android App Development was organized by the Department of CSE & MCA at Dronacharya Group of Institutions on 8th August 2013. Students from diverse engineering backgrounds such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and MCA participated in this informative workshop.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Anuj Gupta, NIT Delhi. The primary focus of the workshop was on understanding the key concepts, best practices and insights of the Android architecture and learn some basic skills of Android Application development. Android is a comprehensive platform that features a Linux-based operating system stack for managing devices, memory, and processes. In the current handheld device market, it’s the closest competitor of Apple’s iPhone. Google Inc purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android’s mobile operating system is based on a modified version of the Linux kernel. Android’s source code and libraries are published under Apache License 2.0, and the Linux kernel below Android is under GPLv2 license. Thus, the openness of this powerful and robust mobile platform attracts and encourages the mobile developer community for development of Applications for Android enabled devices.

The workshop was divided into three sessions. The first session comprised of installation of the ADT. The Android Development Tools (ADT) is a plugin for the Eclipse IDE that is designed to give a powerful, integrated environment in which to build Android applications.

Session 1

1. Getting Started with Android.

2. Setting up Eclipse for Android Software Development.

3. Android Building Blocks.

4. Layouts and UI Control.

The second session dealt with hands on experience of developing an Android App.

1. Introduction to Animation and Graphics.

2. Data Storage.

3. Web Application Development.

The last session focused on publishing one’s Android App in the Google Playstore.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Pulkit Narang from CSE Final year who summarized the entire session by developing a simple mathematical calculation based Android App on the spot for all the students.

The momentous occasion was brought to a close by the address of Prof. Ashwani Kumar who motivated the students to develop many such good apps that would prove beneficial for the people and also advised students to strive hard to make a career in the field of Android App development.
