Faculty Development Workshop on Design & Implementation of Student Centered Learning

13th - 14th January 2016

 

Two days Faculty Development Workshop on “Design & Implementation of Student Centered Learning” was organized by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in association with the IUCEE (Indo-US Collaboration for Engineering Education) on 13th - 14th January 2016 at JSS Academy of Technical Education Noida. Mr. Vinod Kumar (HOD, EEE) & Mr. Manoj Kumar (Assistant Professor, CSE) from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the workshop.

 

The purpose of this workshop was to create an awareness and equip with state - of - the - art knowledge about the Student Centered Learning among the faculty members of different colleges affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. 35 faculty members from different colleges affiliated to AKTU participated in this program to know about the teaching learning process.

 

The session was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof. A. Q. Ansari, Chairman, Electrical Engineering Department, AMU, Aligarh. During the inaugural ceremony Professor S. P. Pandey (Director, GCET Greater Noida), Prof. C. P. Tripathi (Dean, APJAKTU, Lucknow), Prof. K. Kamal (Principal, JSSATE Noida) and Ms. Avneet Hira (Director, Footsteps), graced the event.

 

After the inaugural ceremony, the session started with a short presentation by Prof. Krishna Vedula (Executive Director of IUCEE) through video conferencing. Prof. Vedula compared the engineering education with ecosystem and said that as for the proper growth of any plant, proper ecosystem is required exactly in the same manner for quality engineering education; workshops, Journals, Webinars, Virtual Learning Communications, Conferences, and Certifications etc. are important components. Teachers and students both can update their knowledge by following these resources. Prof. S. P. Pandey addressed the faculties and focused on the professional competency. He also highlighted about the Bloom’s Taxonomy.

 

First session of the workshop started at 12:15 PM by Ms. Avneet Hira.

 

Following topics were covered by her during the two days workshop:

 

1. Understanding the importance of student centered learning and being able to situate the idea within learning environments pertinent to the participants.

2. Developing and modifying content in a way that is relevant to the participants.

3. Designing and implementing individualized formative assessment strategies.

4. Planning classroom instruction to achieve student engagement.

 

In first session she stressed upon the identification of context to employ the Student Centered Learning and development of the teaching philosophy. Second session of the workshop started with the backward design approach followed by think - pair - share activity. After this activity, Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) were designed by every participant based on Bloom’s Taxonomy.

 

Third session started on 2nd day with the design of rubrics by keeping in mind the ILOs designed by the participants on very 1st day of the workshop. These rubrics are very much helpful for the formative assessment of the students. Active learning approach and lesson planning activity were covered by Ms. Avneet in the last session. The workshop came to an end with question answer session by the participants and certificates were distributed among the participants.
