Webinar on Women Rock IT
5th February, 2015

A webinar on “Women Rock IT” was organized by CISCO on 5th February 2015 with the objective to glorify Cisco women who have challenged the stereotypes and have turned their passion for technology into rewarding and successful careers. The Women Rock IT webinar series was a quarterly event for girls and women who were potential IT students and professionals.

The webinar was attended by the girls students of CSE, IT and ECE branches of Dronacharya Group of Institutions Greater Noida.

The webinar investigated the current state of Women Rock IT and predicted a bright future of women in IT Sector. Ms. Jamet Ramey Vice President of Technical Services, Cisco, and Asia Pacific began her speech with a well-known line of line of Neil Armstrong- “A journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step”.

Ms. Jamet appealed women to enter in IT sector as there is no male dominating area in IT field. She motivated the women to realize their capabilities and potential in taking the right decision for their career. She shared her own experience and the reason to select IT sector as her career. She narrated her experience with her father and his motivation behind her success. She explored her attitude at her young age and shared that she used to enjoy coding and developing games at that time. She highlighted four reasons to select I.T. Sector as IT Sector is providing More Jobs, More Money, Meaningful Work and More Equality.

Ms. Jamet further discussed that the tech industry pays an annual wage of $93,800, which is 98 percent more than the average private sector wage. In some states like California and Massachusetts, it's significantly higher, at $123,900 and $116,000, respectively. She elaborated the reasons for women to select IT Sector as women want to fix things and to make things better for others. Using laptops, mobile phones and ubiquitous internet connectivity have allowed workers in tech - and many other industries - to work remotely with non-traditional schedules.

Ms. Jamet discussed that the salary gap for women is significantly lesser while gender-based wage disparity does still exist in other sectors. She pointed out the finding of a recent survey that the average woman in tech makes $87,500 a year, compared to $95,000 for men. She also highlighted that there were many non-technical jobs also available in IT sector for the women who had non-technical degree. She strongly recommends technology as an outstanding career for women that provide more opportunity, money, meaningful work, flexibility, and, ultimately, more progress towards equality.

The webinar highlighted IT careers as important and viable opportunities for females from a wide range of Technology backgrounds to turn their passion for Technology into meaningful successful careers.
