Faculty Development Program on Embedded System
Mahamaya Technical University, NOIDA
December 9th – 11th, 2013

A Faculty Development Program on Embedded System was conducted by Mahamaya Technical University, Noida in association with Intel® College Excellence Program (ICEP), Bangalore during 9th- 11th December, 2013.

Mr. Manoj Kumar Yadav, Ms. Prerna Singh and Mr. Sunil Kumar from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida were delegated to attend Faculty DevelopmentProgram.

Mr. Sai Nath Shanbhag and Mr. Siva Prasad Yadav, Senior Trainer of Foundation for Innovation and Collaborative Education (FICE), Intel were the experts who conducted this workshop.

The FDP focused on the following key points day wise:

First Day

1. Introduction to Embedded systems.

2. Discussion on basics of Intel Atom kit, available interfaces and board details.

3. Introduction to Intel Atom architecture as compared to IA32 systems.

4. Brief introduction to the GNU/Linux based system.

5. Hands on session on command line tools and use of command shell in Linux.

6. Assembly language on Linux platform.

7. Introduction to NASM assembler.

8. C programming on Linux platform.

9. Accessing Linux system calls from assembly.

10. Call of assembly language subroutines through C.

11. Hands on session with peripheral boards. Accessing on-board GPIO with simple peripheral boards.

12. Session concluded with open discussion and feedback from participants.

Second Day

1. Discussion on IA32 architecture.

2. Hands on session on use of GNU tools for system design and development.

3. Hands on session with peripheral boards.

4. Case study demonstration and discussion on end to end application development on Intel Atom kit.

5. Discussion on embedded system development and design and use of subsystems for an embedded system.

6. Interface through serial port and demonstration on different methods of data access.

7. Session conclusion with open discussion feedback on the workshop from participants.

Third Day

1. Demonstration and discussion on Intel Atom based design examples.

2. Demonstration on accessing the networking capabilities of the system through socket programming. Simple client server application, browser for data display.

3. Discussion on case studies and domains suitable for taking up projects for Intel Atom based systems.

The objective of this comprehensive program was to give an overview of Embedded Systems, typical building blocks of Embedded Systems and Software aspects of embedded applications including features of Real Time Operating Systems. This course also gave an overview of Intel ATOM Processor, highlighting its low power features which is desirable in low power embedded system design. Participants were given hands on experience of ATOM Boards and Interface.

The participants were exposed to a number of latest software and fabricated various technical projects as well.
