April 15th, 2014

Fourth semester students of Department of Civil Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida along with two faculty members Ms. Sona Simon and Mrs. Nidhi Jain went on an industrial visit to Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi on 15th April, 2014.

CSIR - is a premier national laboratory established in 1952 and is a constituent of CSIR. The institute provides technical and consultancy services to various user organizations in India and abroad. For capacity building of human resources in the area of highway engineering to undertake and execute roads and runway projects, Institute has the competence to organize National and International Training Programmes continuing education courses since 1962 to disseminate the R&D finding to the masses.

At CSIR-CRRI students visited the transport planning division and traffic engineering and safety division. The Transport Planning Division was functioning as Transportation planning & Environment Division till March 2012. From April 2012 it was made a separate entity with an aim to promote R & D and consultancy in the area of Transport Planning, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Transportation Economics. The major objectives are to introduce new innovative approaches in the above areas for sustainable road development and evolving policies for sustainable transportation planning at urban centers. Traffic engineering and safety division is the pioneer in developing traffic management system, Traffic Management Strategies for Urban Road Network and Highways, Road Safety Audit, Design of Transport Infrastructure, Imparting Knowledge to practicing Engineers, Transport Planners and Traffic Police in understanding the Traffic Management Options, Strategies, Measures and their applicability for Indian conditions.

Students learned about how to carry out driver testing for special purpose drivers. They also asked their doubts and the lab technicians cleared those doubts by giving practical examples. They also got to know about how to do design, construction and maintenance of roads and runways, road traffic safety and analysis and traffic and transportation planning of mega and medium cities.

Students also had an interactive session with Dr. S. Velmurugan and Dr. Neelima Chakrabarty and visited various labs developed under these divisions and students also got the first hand experience in simulation. It was a golden opportunity to enhance our knowledge in the field of transport planning, traffic engineering and safety.
