Workshop on Design of Hydraulic Structures

12th April 2017

A One day workshop on Design of Hydraulic Structures was organised by AGI Chapter Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 12th April, 2017. Dr. A. K. Keshari, Professor, Civil Engineering Department IIT Delhi was the Recourse Person of the workshop. Thirty Three students from Civil Engineering Department, DGI, attended the workshop.

Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Bagga, Director - DGI Greater Noida welcomed Prof. Keshari and advised the students to attend the lecture with complete sincerity and take advantages from the lecture.

Prof. Keshari started the session with Introduction of Hydraulic Structures and their types. Prof. Keshari discussed the classifications of structure along with the terms related to all Hydraulic Structures. In his lecture, he explained dam, spillway, weir, barrage, cross drainage works, canal regulation, river training works, rain water harvesting structures, surge tank etc.

Prof. Kesharifurther discussed about different types of forces that act on gravity dams such as water pressure, self - weight, uplift pressure, earthquake pressure, ice pressure, wave pressure, silt pressure. He focused on different variants of forces on structure under certain load conditions. He also explained how earthquake pressure is different for different zones and also discussed the concept of hydrodynamic pressure under different zones.

During the post lunch session Prof. Keshari discussed Design of Hydraulic Structures. He said that a hydraulic structure can be built in rivers, a sea, or any body of water where there is a need for a change in the natural flow of water.

Prof. Keshari stressed that Hydraulic Structures may also be used to measure the flow of water. When used to measure the flow of water, hydraulic structures are defined as a class of specially shaped, static devices over or through which water is directed in such a way that under free-flow conditions at a specified location (point of measurement) a known level to flow relationship exists. Hydraulic structures of this type can generally be divided into two categories: flumes and weirs. Prof. Keshari discussed the stability factors of hydraulic structures along with the failure causes of structures. He gave an overview on the channelizing of rivers, concept of meandering, and also variation in discharge of river at Farakka barrage. He highlighted about the change of course of rivers since 1960’s to 2015 at the barrage along with the satellite view records since 1960’s.

Session concluded with discussion on doubts and queries raised by students.

It was an enlightening session in which Prof. Keshari shared his rich experience on Design of Hydraulic Structures.

The workshop ended with the presentation of memento to Prof. Keshari by Dr. S. K. Bagga. Prof. D. V. Bhise, HOD Civil Engineeringdelivered the Vote of Thanks.
