Department of Science & Technology - Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP) 2014

A session on DST - Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme 2014 was held at Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi on 21st January, 2014. Ms. Sona Simon, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering attended the programme from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida.

 

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) jointly with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Indo- US Science & Technology Forum and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin launched the DST- Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme during March 2007.

 

The aim of the programme was to accelerate innovative Indian technologies into the global markets, to help innovators assess the right scientific and commercial value of their innovation and to get the right product to the right market with the right partner at the right time. The India Innovation programme is the only programme of its kind because of its focus on teaching using world-class commercialization strategies and the business development assistance provided. About 150 delegates attended the programme from various companies, industries and institutes.

 

Mr. Sujeet Thakur, IP lawyer FICCI and Mr. Akash Sinha were the key speakers for the programme. The event started with the presentation on the India Innovation Growth Programme by FICCI. Mr. Sinha explained in detail about the programme selection process. The whole process includes two phases. In the first phase of the programme, the FICCI project team will select 100 innovative technologies from a wide range of sectors such as aeronautics, agriculture, biotechnology, chemistry, communications, computing, defense, electronics, environment, healthcare, information technology, manufacturing, materials, life sciences, nanotechnology, petrochemical semiconductors and transportation. Then during the second screening phase of the programme, the selected 50 among the 100 innovators will be given one week advanced training. Then at the end of the competition, 30 best innovations will be awarded.

 

The programme was followed by a presentation on Intellectual Property Rights by Mr. SujeethThakur , IP lawyer. He explained about how to obtain the IP protection and route to file and obtain an effective patent. The programme came to an end with one of the successful case study from IIGP by Mr. Akash Sinha. He asserted that credibility, finance, mentoring and guidance are essential to connect the innovators with industry to turn their ideas into commercial ventures.
