QEEE Session on

Transformer - Electrical Machines

18th - 20th January 2017

QEEE Session on “Transformer - Electrical Machines” was organized by IIT, Madras under D2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT during 18th - 20th January 2017 which was conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Bhuvaneshwari G., IIT Delhi. Prof. Vinod Kumar, HOD - EEE, DGI Greater Noida was the Local Faculty Coordinator for the session. 8 students from B. Tech (EEE) 4th and 6th Semester attended the session.

Day 1: 18th January 2017

Prof. (Dr.) Bhuvaneshwari G. started her lecture with the real - life applications of transformer like Power Transformer, Distribution Transformer, Instrument Transformer and Isolation Transformer. She defined the transformer and discussed the construction and working principle of transformer. She derived EMF equation and explained about different types of losses occurs in the transformer. She also explained how iron losses are reduced and solved some numerical problems as well as cleared doubts of the students.

Day 2: 19th January 2017

Prof. Bhuvaneshwari started her lecture with brief review of the topics covered in her previous lecture. She explained about the leakage reactance and different methods through which leakage reactance of the transformer can be reduced. Equivalent circuit of the transformer and impedance transformation were also covered during the session. She also explained about the efficiency and voltage regulation of the transformer and derived the formula for maximum efficiency. At the end of this lecture she gave answers of different questions asked by the students to the level of their satisfaction.

Day 3: 20th January 2017

The third and last session of the program started with Open Circuit and Short Circuit tests of the transformer. She explained the procedure of performing these tests and calculated the different parameters of the equivalent circuit of the transformer. She also explained about the Sumpner and polarity tests of the transformer. Phasor diagram and auto - transformer were also covered during the session. She solved some numerical questions from the assignment and given answers to the questions asked by the students. The program came to an end at 12:10 PM with the fruitful discussions on transformer.

Keeping in mind the benefits of the students, three quizzes and one proctored quiz followed by an assignment is given to the students, which is to be submitted by the students through their QEEE account on or before 10th February 2017.

Overall this QEEE session was very beneficial for the students and will add in - depth knowledge and help them to solve very conceptual questions related to the topic.
