Workshop on

Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing

27th & 28th January 2017

A Workshop on Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing was conducted by DGI SAEINDIA Collegiate Club Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 27th & 28th January 2017. 21 students from Mechanical and Electrical & Electronics Engineering branch participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Gaurav Siwal (Assistant Professor) Department of Mechanical Engineering, DGI.

Prof. S. K. Bagga, Director, DGI inaugurated the workshop and addressed the participants with inspiring and motivational words while Prof. B. L. Kaul, Registrar, DGI encouraged them to be attentive and get benefited from the workshop.

Day 1: 27/01/2017

Mr. Gaurav Siwal, gave a brief description of FDM Technology, Types of 3D Printing, their application and scope in industries, materials used in 3D printers and Printing CAD file on FDM printers. Students were also informed about the Rapid Prototyping using 3D printing. During lab session participants were demonstrated the design software’s available for 3D modeling, like Catia and Solid Works, 2D and 3D Sketches, application of different features to the parts and part assembly. Students were explained about important design considerations to be kept in mind while designing a model for 3D printing.

During the post lunch session students designed their models on CATIA software. After the completion of models they were given a demonstration on Cura (Slicing Software) and Pronterface (Printing Software) required for 3D printing. A small prototype was printed as a part of demonstration.

Day 2: 28/01/2017

Mr. Gaurav Siwal continued the workshop with discussion on important considerations for 3D printing of the objects. Calibration procedure for printing of the objects and working of stepper motor was also explained. For hands on training students were given a real world problem in which they were asked to design and 3D print a prototype of a Planetary Gear System. Participants were divided in five teams of four members each for the completion of the task. All the teams designed the 3D models keeping in mind the functional aspect of the product. Students designed and 3D printed the Prototypes.

The workshop concluded with evaluation of prototypes printed by each team. Each design was evaluated for dimensional accuracy, density and surface finish. Students took keen interest in learning the fundamentals of the 3D printing technology during the workshop.
