STC on “Protection and Monitoring of Power System Network

27th June to 1st July 2016

A Short Term Course on “Protection and Monitoring of Power System Network in Smart Grid / Micro - Grid Environment” was organized by IIT Roorkee from 27th June - 1st July 2016. Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Electrical and Electronics Department Dronacharya Group of Institutions Greater Noida attended the STC.

The objective of the course was to provide knowledge of different types of control switching devices, advance operations and their applications.

Day 1: 27th June 2016

Dr. Bhaveshkumar R. Bhalja and Dr. B Das from the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee inaugurated the session and welcomed the participants.

Dr. Urmil B. Parikh, Smart Asset Management Specialist, PGHV-Service at ABB India Limited discussed different types of control switching devices, advance operations and their applications. He also discussed severe operating conditions for SF6 circuit breakers.

Dr. Parikh continued his lecture on practical applications of control switching with their case study. He explained the De-Energization of reactor and no load power transformer interruption at low magnetizing current. He further explained advantages of controlled reactor energization with few examples of ABB.

Day 2: 28th June 2016

Dr. Bhaveshkumar R. Bhalja discussed the Wide Area Measurement to Augment Local Protection with PMU Applications, fault zone identifications and protections of bus bar. He explained the different types of bus bar arrangements, faults occurrence in bus bar and recent trends in bus bar protections.

Dr. B Das discussed the Basic Signal Processing techniques and fault classification of Digital Distance Protection.

Day 3: 29th June 2016

In the first session, Dr. Das discussed modeling of relays and instrument transformers. He explained Current Transformer (CT) and Potential Transformer (PT) for Protection System, and showed the impact of analog filter on the CT waveform.

Dr. P Jena Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee discussed sequence based relaying scheme for transmission lines and their advantages. She explained Directional Relay Concept for Series Compensated Line, Double Circuit Line and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensated Line in which faults occur.

Day 4: 30th June 2016

Dr. Manoj Tripathi Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee discussed “Power Transformer: Protection and Condition Monitoring”. He explained the different type of faults that occur in the transformer and how they can be eliminated using relay or circuit breaker.

Dr. Bhalja explained “Protection Aspects of Distribution Network with High Penetration of Distributed Generations”. He explained the Islanding Detections in Distributed Generations. Islanding is the situation in which a system is electrically isolated from other parts of the system but still continues to be supplied by other sources of generation.

Day 5: 1st July 2016

Dr. Ganesh Kumbhar Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee briefed “Recent Trends in Condition Monitoring of Power Transformer”. He explained the Conventional Tests, Temperature Monitoring, Thermal Modeling and Life Assessment of Power Transformer. He further explained the methods by which transformers can be monitored e.g. Thermal Modeling and Life Assessment, Dissolved Gas Analysis, Partial Discharge Diagnostic, Frequency Response Analysis, Recovery Voltage Measurement and Dielectric Response Diagnostics.

The course ended with feedback session followed by the certificates distribution to the participants. Dr. B K Gandhi, QIP Coordinator rendered Vote of Thanks.

The short term course enhanced the knowledge of the participants on recent trends and issues of protection in smart grid / micro - grid environment.
