Leveraging English Language to Enhance Subject Learning

9th EDUConvEx on the theme “Leveraging English Language to Enhance Subject Learning” was organised at Air Force Auditorium, Subrato Park, New Delhi on 15th April 2017. Three faculty members Dr. Sunil Kumar Mishra, Dr. Sahab Singh and Ms. Rasveen from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the conference.

 

The objective of this conference was to provide an opportunity and platform for individuals, institutions and educational professionals to participate in discussion on the importance of leveraging English Language to enhance subject learning in various streams.

 

In the inaugural address of the conference Prof. M. M. Pant, Founder, LMP Education Trust and former Pro-Vice Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) New Delhi expressed that academician need to focus on creativity and innovation as these are important attributes of language learning. He further emphasised on the inter-connection of language skills with subject learning in classrooms and beyond. His lecture was followed by a brief speech delivered by Ms. Vijaya Padma Srinivas, Sr. Assessment Services Manager, South AsiaCambridge English Language Assessment, UK who was of the opinion shared that every teacher should conduct activities like Group Discussion, Debate, extempore, etc. so that the students start learning second language.  She stated that making such an ambience is the responsibility of teachers only. She also talked about the role of resume writing, job application, grammar, sentence formation, interviews, listening skills etc. in getting employable and leading from the front.

 

Another seasoned speaker Mr. John Kerr CEO of Qualifications and Assessments International, UK shared that the teachers have to play vital role in shaping the careers of their students. They will need to teach not only to the syllabus but also be responsible for developing their overall personality in addition to ensuring communication skills. He firmly expressed that to be successful in the present competitive world, one must have the abilities to learn swiftly in English right at the school stage.

 

Mr. John Robertson, Head of ESL at Woodstock School, Mussoorie, India reminded that English language has become a kind of passport to the future. He emphasised on acquisition of skills which are fit for expression and impression. He stated that every teacher irrespective his expertise and subject should ensure language skills in his students for making them employable.

 

The conference was interesting as around 450 attendees learnt the significance of effective skills development for employability, innovative educational and career pathways for success. Every speaker stressed the importance of using an innovative techniques and diverse teaching strategies to give young people the skills and competencies required for future success in a changing world.

 

It was a nice platform where the participants also got a chance to share their Strategies, Approaches and Ideas for imparting innovative and quality education leading to employability.
