Workshop Report
On
Effective Teaching Through Case Study Methodology

Venue: IIT DeIhi, New DeIhi
 

Pushpendra Panwar, Associate Professor, Dept. of Management Studies was delegated to participate in International Forum for Excellence in Higher Education (IFEHE) sponsored 3 Days Workshop on “Effective Teaching Through Case Study Methodology” held at IIT Delhi from 22nd March 2013 to 24th March 2013.

 

The workshop was organized for the teachers and managers desirous of sharpening their teaching skills and competencies. Research Scholars and Students who are looking towards teaching as career were also a part of the delegates. Representatives from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttaranchal, Rajasthan and Karnataka etc. participated in the workshop.

 

The programme began at 9.30 am on 22nd Mar and concluded at 5 pm on 24th Mar 2013. This workshop was aimed at sharpening skills in the case method of teaching.

 

The Inaugural session started with welcome address by the Dr. Harish Chaudhry, Workshop Coordinator, Department of Management Studies, IIT DeIhi followed by Prof. Kanika T Bahl, Head, DMS and Prof. S. V. Veeravalli, Coordinator QIP/CEP. They shared few upcoming activities to be undertaken by Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi during the year.

 

Prof. Kanika T Bahl in her welcome speech highlighted the importance and objectives of organizing program. She discussed the difference between teaching case studies and teaching through case method.

 

The participants were highly benefitted from the workshop as the training at workshop helped them build required skills for career success and gain hands-on experience with required tools. There were very interactive sessions, with many queries on utilization of right tool for Effective Teaching through Case Study Methodology. The Hands On case based learning sessions provided them rich insight into the fine development of using the case study methods. There are three requirements of effective teaching using the case method. 

1. Identifying the most effective cases for the topics in the course.

2. Preparing to lead the class discussion.

3. Leading the class discussion in a manner such that students discover the theory rather than be informed about it.

 

The Contents of the workshop were:

1. Application of the case method

2. Criterion for selecting the relevant case

3. Analyzing the case

4. Leading the case discussion

5. Do's and don'ts of a case discussion

6. Writing an appropriate case.

 

Dr. Harish Chaudhry and Dr. Shveta Singh, Department of Management Studies, IIT DeIhi enlightened the session on Cases on 22nd Mar 2013.

 

Dr. Priyank Narayan, IIM Bangalore delivered talks on topics “Leading the case discussion” and “Analysing a case’ on 23rd Mar 2013.

 

A very warm session on the topic “A Good Case Vs A Poor Case” was delivered by Dr. Sunil Gupta, IIT Delhi with a case on 23rd Mar 2013.

 

On Sunday, 24th Mar 2013 the session started with motivational speeches from various faculties. The Workshop concluded on 24th March 2013 with distribution of certificates to the participants.
