Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida
Session on Success through Value-Based Leadership by Shiv Khera
PHD Chamber, Delhi
January 10th, 2014

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a session on ‘Success through Value- Based Leadership’ by Shiv Khera on January 10th, 2014 in PHD Chamber, Delhi. Ms. Prachi Agarwal and Ms. Gurpreet Kaur presented Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida.

Mr. Shiv Khera, the founder of Qualified Learning Systems Inc. USA, an author, educator, business Consultant and successful Entrepreneur is a much sought-after speaker. Mr. Khera is the author of 16 books including international bestseller 'You Can Win', which has sold over 2.76 million copies in 16 languages. His other books are creating new records.

His trademark is "Winners don't do different thingsthey do things differently"

The session started at 02:45 PM with a welcome note by Mr. Sarkar – Chairman, Innovation Cell of PHD Chamber. He started his note by welcoming Mr. Khera and this was followed by his felicitation. Mr. Sarkar suggested the formula of success and quoted – ‘If you don’t succeed, cheat and repeat till the time you are caught’. He kept his address very short and handed over the session to Mr. Khera.

Mr. Khera was welcomed by the audience with a big round of applause. He started his address by quoting an incidence from the past at the time of World War 2. He stated that Winston Churchill – the UK PM and George Bernard Shaw- the eminent writer were never in good terms. They accidently met over a Dinner at a common friend’s home and the friend took Bernard Shaw forcefully to Winston Churchill to shake hands. Bernard Shaw became agitated and said, “I don’t shake hands with a fool” to which Mr. Churchill replied, “ But I Do” and shook hands with Mr. Shaw and the whole gathering had a hearty time. He quoted this incidence to let the crowd know the power of Leadership. He stated that the first and foremost quality of a good leadership is being humorous.

He advised that all around the world, businesses have people problems and not operational problems. If any resource in the organization says that, “I cannot do a particular job” it means 2 things. “I am not capable to doing that job” or “I don’t want to do that job.” Now, the first reason is a Technical and Training issue and the second reason could be an Attitude issue or value issue. By quoting this he wanted the audience to know that as a Leader, it is his job to know the exact reason and work upon it in the right direction. He stated that the people should get involved in the system and try to make it better or else they do not have a right to criticize the system.

“Success is not having any problems but to overcome all the problems”. To prove this he quoted Michael Phelps example. Michael Phelps is a record holder of having 8 gold medals in 2008 -Beijing Olympics. He had been preparing for Olympics for over a decade and just before 2 years of the actual show he had fractured his hand and the doctor advised him not to go under water. The doctor further stated that even if his hand is fully recuperated it might not have same strength. To which Phelps replied, “I will use my legs”. 2 years hence we saw him as a World Champion. He further stated that success is the will power lying within. Mohd.Ali , the world Boxing Champion after getting knocked down every time, stood by his will power and not his physical strength.

Elaborating further, he stated that successful people have 3 skills embedded in them.

1) People Skills

2) Selling Skills

3) Prioritizing skills

He stated while discussing People Skills that all the successful people are wealth creators. They never gave importance to money but to create value and relationships. Compatibility does not make relationships successful, but the ability to keep pace with incompatible people make relationships successful. A person has to be very committed in his work and should be fully dedicated. 1 committed person can fight 100 not committed people.

While discussing Selling skills he stated that this is the highest paid profession in the whole world and selling does not primarily means selling a product or service. An interviewee while appearing in the interview is selling himself, a politician giving a speech is selling himself and he himself (Mr. Shiv Khera) at that very moment is selling himself. A good person to sell himself has to have 90% conviction and 10 % commitment.

There came the last skill, which was prioritizing skills. He stated that this is a very unique skill because priorities are value based. A person should have sense of what is urgent and what is important. HE should know what he negotiable and what is not. Also, he should know what he will stand for and against.

In his closing remarks he stated that he has been in so many countries and addressed millions of people but the eternal and ethical value remains the same allover, be it New York, New Delhi or New Zealand.

The session concluded at 04:30 PM and was followed by Networking Tea.
