STP on Preparing Students for Job Interviews
7th October 2016
 

Dronacharya Group of Institutions Greater Noida in collaboration with NITTTR, Chandigarh conducted the 3rd phase of Student Training Program (STP) on “Preparing Students for Job Interviews” under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) on 7th October 2016. Thirty students from CSE, IT and ECE Department attended the STP.

 

The event was inaugurated by Dr. PK Tulsi, Head of the Department of Education and Educational Management, NITTTR, Chandigarh. She explained the objectives and the schedule of the program.

 

Dr. Tulsi explained the skills, required for a job, which are:

 

1. Professional Skill

2. Communication Skill

 

Dr. Tulsi explained that quality of technical education has to be improved because Professional Skills are based on domain knowledge. During the session, employability research data of World Bank Study 2011 & Aspiring Mind Assessment Pvt. Ltd. study 2016 was discussed in detail.

 

Dr. Tulsi then explained Communication Skills and emphasized that many students do not get job due to lack of communication skill in spite of having excellent academic record as well as good knowledge of their domain subject.

 

According to Dr. Tulsi, the contribution of different criteria in communication is:

 

1. Verbal Communication : 7 %

2. Tonal Quality : 38%

3. Non Verbal : 55%

 

The next session of the day was conducted by Mr. Sanmeet Sandhu, a trainer of Aptitude, Soft Skill, and Communication Skill at Thapar University, Patiala. He explained methods to make resume effective and shared its format with the participants. He discussed 48 factors which should be kept in mind during the preparation of resume.

 

He emphasized on :

 

1. Learning Skill

2. Team Work

3. Leadership Quality

4. Logical Thinking

5. Problem Solving Skill

6. Social Sensitivity etc.

 

He then handed over the podium to Dr. P k Tulsi, who continued a lecture on “Group Discussion”. She said that topics for Group Discussion may be current affairs, technical topics or social topics.

 

In this session, she focused on following terms:

 

1. Listening Ability

2. Communication Skill

3. Leadership Skill

4. Learning Skill

5. Assertiveness

6. Flexibility

7. Initiative

8. Ability to work in a team /group

 

Dr. Tulsi categorized Group Discussion in three stages:

 

1. Initiative Techniques

2. Body of the Group Discussion

3. Summarization / Conclusion

 

Dr. Tulsi later discussed Case Studies to the participants. All case studies were related to the mistakes that are often committed during Group Discussion.

 

Further Dr. Vidhu Mohan, Former Professor of Psychology Department, Punjab University conducted a session on Pre and Post Interview Planning. She explained how to react, how to sit and how to manage one’s body language while facing interviews.

 

Dr. Mohan advised that one should never use words which are not relevant to him / her. She gave an exercise to the students to examine them. Under this session she shared a presentation that contained the following questions for self-analysis:-

 

1. Who am I?

2. Interview Phase

3. Appearance

4. Timing

 

Dr. Mohan gave 10 minutes to the students to think about themselves and write a paragraph on themselves. Later she focused on Interview Phases i.e. Pre & Post Interview Phase. Pre Interview impressions can also affect, what the interviewer notices about the interviewee like code of conduct, behavior and appearance of the applicant. One must be well groomed and wear formal dress and be punctual.

 

The last session of the day was query round.

 

Dr. Vidhu Mohan and Dr. PK Tulsi concluded the session by resolving queries of the students and gave them valuable tips for their success.
