Hydrological Design: Basics and Applications

18th October 2016

Department of Civil Engineering, under the banner of AGI (Association of Geospatial Industries) of Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized an Expert Lecture on “Hydrological Design: Basics and Applications” on 18th October, 2016. It was conducted by Prof. (Dr.) A.K Keshari, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. 63 students from B. Tech (CE) 3rd & 4th Year participated in the lecture.

The Session started with the presentation on the motivation behind the Hydrological Design. The rapid urbanization, increased population and changing lifestyle cause the scarcity for the availability of fresh water. For that precise hydrological analysis and appropriate water management plans are warranted to ensure water sustainability.

During the session Dr. Keshari confined the Hydrologic System Model for determining the discharge from a catchment area, the different hydrological processes which includes the precipitation, infiltration and evapotranspiration etc., governing equations - continuity, momentum and energy equations for determining flow of water on the surface and through the soil.

Dr. Keshari discussed the Flow Mechanism through different types of channels, Flow Properties, Energy & Momentum Correction Factors, Channels flow type for steady and unsteady flow, governing equation for the steady GVF. The subsurface water zones like infiltration and recharge, infiltration process, different surface moisture zones, moisture profiles during infiltration and commonly used infiltration models were explained including the factors affecting controlling the infiltration rates. The hydrological design quantities for designing the hydraulic structures were also explained. At the end different sustainable water management strategies were explained.

In the next session Dr Keshari discussed about the emerging technologies in hydrology and their applications. He introduced Geological Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) and their state of art on applications in water resources, especially in surface and groundwater hydrology. The applications of GIS and RS such as annual surface water potential and groundwater potential in rivers basins of India were discussed in this lecture.

The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Prof. D. V. Bhise (HOD, Civil Engineering Department, DGI) and presentation of a memento to Dr. A K Keshari by Dr. S. K. Bagga, Director, DGI.
