On the second day of educational tour students visited the museum of Survey of India. Survey of India is India's central engineering agency in charge of mapping and surveying.

At museum students were welcomed by Mr.O.P Tripathi (Additional Surveyor General, Survey of India,) and Mr. M.P. Sharma (Curator Museum). Mr. M. P. Sharma guided students inside the museum. Mr. Sharma explained a brief history of Survey of India, Surveyor General, and recent development in surveying technique. During the visit students were explained the following:

1. Coordinate system in surveying.

2. Concept of compensation bar, Gravity Correction in surveying, Ramden’s 100 foot chain.

3. Concept of invention of transit theodolite.

4. First leveling in India.

5. Redefinition of Indian Vertical Datum

6. Various development projects such as Dam deformation, Tunnel alignment etc.

7. What is mean sea level and how to measure it.

8. A view of 24 Inch Astronomical Instrument and Stranger’s Zenith Sector Stereoscope.

9. Working of Tide Gauge to observe tidal variation.

10. A view of 24 component tide predicting machine and 42 component Doodson predicting machine.

11. Challenges faced by surveyor in leveling of Everest Mountain.

The tour was a unique experience as it offered the students a deeper insight into the rapidly developing survey techniques and canal diversion techniques. It also facilitated the students to understand the problems associated with old survey techniques. The tour came to an end at 5:15 PM on March 19th, 2015.
