Visit to Signature Bridge, Delhi

On 13th September, 2014, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a visit to the Signature BridgeConstruction Site in Delhi. 2nd and 3rd Year Civil Engineering Students were accompanied by staff member Mr. Sarvagya Tripathi, Department of Civil Engineering. The purpose of the visit was to make students familiar with the principles of Bridge Engineering which includes design, construction and standard specifications.

 

Signature Bridge is being constructed by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) across the Yamuna River at Wazirabad in Delhi and promises to be a great attraction of the capital city. The bridge will link the National Highway No. 1 on western bank to eastern bank of Yamuna River, connecting north Delhi to east Delhi. It will have a bow-shaped steel pylon 154 meters high. The main deck of the bridge will be supported by cables which in turn will be connected to a central pylon.

 

The students reached the GAMON site office and were welcomed by Mr. Saket Sikdar (Executive Engineer, GAMON). The students were then taken to the seminar hall of GAMON, where they give presentation about the project and also explained different aspects of this project.

 

After presentation student were taken for site visit, where they were briefed by the Safety Officer, Mr. P. K. Singh, (Manager, Safety) and were provided with safety gadgets for the site visit.

 

Site Engineer, Mr. Rishi, escorted the students to the main bridge construction area and explained about the methods which they were using in the construction of the Signature Bridge. He also briefed the students about the latest techniques of bridge construction.

 

Main feature of site:

 

1. In a single place, where all types of foundation is constructed i.e Open foundation, Well foundation, Pile foundation.

2. Different types of reinforcement.

3. Different types of concrete mix.

4. Use of fly ash as fill at site.

5. Different type of boom placer, crane, and other highly technical machine.

6. Introduction of cable stayed harp type bridge.

7. First time in world use of well foundation accompanied with pile foundation.

8. Special construction requirement in water prone area.

9. Introduction of pylon leg, body, and head.

10. Different practical problem associated in heavy construction at site.
