Introduction to CNC and CNC Training Program

25th & 26th October 2016

A Two days training program on “Introduction to CNC and CNC Programming” under the aegis of CoESM (Training partner of MSME, Govt. of India) was organized at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 25th & 26th October, 2016. The objective of training program was to acquaint students with CNC Lathe and its functioning as well as to master programming technique. 30 students from Department of Mechanical Engineering participated in the training program.

Mr. K.C. Verma, CNC Trainer, MSME, PPDC TDC, Agra was the main instructor for the training program. Mr. Anurag Sharma, Assistant Professor, DGI coordinated the program.

Day 1: 25th October 2016

The training program started with the introduction of CNC machines and their importance. Mr. K.C. Verma discussed the history of CNC machines and their uses in modern industries. He explained the terms DNC and NC as applicable to CNC machines along with the coordinate systems. Mr. Verma also gave a brief of the axes system and reference system of CNC Lathe machine. He further described the G and M codes required for programming.

During the post lunch session, Mr. Verma explained CYCLE - 95 with various input methods and a program on turning cycle. He explained different kind of contours with their programs.

Day 2: 26th October 2016

Second day started with introduction to simple programming methods by Mr. Anurag Sharma. Students were made aware of the differences between a simple CNC program and Canned Cycle programs. During the hands - on session the students were divided into three groups. Mr. K.C. Verma conducted the training session on CNC lathe machine for the first group while Mr. Anurag Sharma explained the basic programs of CNC lathe to the other groups. Students were explained simple programming methods for Step Turning, Taper Turning, Circular Interpolation, Threading, Drilling and Multiple Programming Cycles.

The basic requirements and working environment of CNC lathe were explained to the students. Mr. Verma then explained the controller of CNC machine. Students learnt how to perform referencing system on CNC lathe and work piece. Various methods of writing programs on machine were discussed along with the procedure of Real Time Simulation and Workpiece Offset.

During the post lunch session Mr. K.C. Verma explained the uses of canned cycles for making the programs of step turning, taper turning and circular interpolation along with simple programming methods. Students practiced the program on CNC lathe.

During the last session students learnt the functioning of CNC lathe. The Hands-on session has helped students to consolidate further their knowledge of CNC Programming. The training program instilled confidence in students about functioning and programming of CNC Lathe.
