EXPERT LECTURE ON NETWORK THEORY: BASICS & APPLICATIONS

IEEE Student Chapter, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized an Expert Lecture on “Network Theory: Basics & Applications” on 22nd August 2016 by Prof. B.K. Panigrahi , IIT Delhi. 48 students of ECE and 22 students of EEE branch along with the faculty members of ECE and EEE attended the expert lecture.

 

The objective of the lecture was to provide in - depth knowledge of Network theory and its applications to the students and faculty members.

 

Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Bagga, Director, DGI Greater Noida, welcomed the guest Speaker, Prof. (Dr.) B. K Panigrahi, IIT Delhi. In his welcome address Prof. Bagga emphasized the importance of subject and advised the students to attain the maximum knowledge from the lecture.

 

First Session:

 

Dr. B. K. Panigrahi started the session by the introduction of basic elements of Network theory i.e. Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor. Resistor is an element which opposes the flow of current and dissipates energy in the form of heat. Inductor is an element which opposes the change in magnitude of current and stores energy in the form of magnetic field. He discussed Capacitor that opposes the change in magnitude of voltage and stores energy in the form of electrostatic field. He explained about the independent and dependent energy sources and solved some complex questions related to the topic in a simple approach.

 

Dr. Panigrahi also described the different methods to solve the DC circuit problems like nodal and mesh analysis method. He explained how to solve the problems using the above methods by writing the equations directly in matrix form that takes minimum time. He solved various problems on these methods and gave some problems to the students for practice purpose.

 

Session 2:

 

In this session, Dr. Panigrahi explained about the different type of Network Theorems like Superposition theorem, Thevenin’s theorem, Norton’s theorem, Maximum power transfer theorem and Millman’s theorem and compared with conventional methods for solving DC network problems. He showed that Network problems can be solved in easier way by Network theorems than conventional methods.

 

Dr. Panigrahi explained that network theorems can also be applied to AC circuits, and solved various problems on it to clarify the concepts of AC fundamentals. He also explained various transients in AC circuits.

 

In the end, Dr. Panigrahi explained the total power and its components: Real Power and Reactive Power. He also emphasized the role and importance of Power factor in electrical engineering. Finally applications of network theory in various projects and industries were discussed by Dr. Panigrahi.

 

The lecture ended with memento presentation by Prof. S. K. Bagga, Director, DGI to the Guest Speaker Prof. B. K. Panigrahi and vote of thanks by Prof. Vinod Kumar, HOD, ECE.

 

Overall, the lecture was very informative and motivating for the students.
