QEEE Session on Spectroscopy and Its Applications

13th - 15th February 2017

QEEE session on Spectroscopy and Its Applications” was organized by IIT, Madrasunder D2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT on 13th, 14th & 15th February 2017. The session was conducted by Prof. Edamana Prasad, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras. 26 Students from B. Tech. (ECE / EEECSIT / IT) attended the session at DGI, Greater Noida.

Day1: 13th February 2017

Prof. Edamana Prasad started the session with the lecture on UV - Visible spectroscopy. He explained what is spectroscopy, why it is important, how light is absorbed by a solution in UV - Visible spectroscopy by giving an example of cardboard box with perforation. He derived the Beer Lambert Lawand explained Absorbance and Transmittance, UV - Visible spectroscopy, Electromagnetic Radiation- Matter Interaction, Different type of absorption in organic molecule. He discussed a paper on Detection of Mercury(II) Ions Using Colorimetric Gold Nanoparticles on Paper - Based Analytical Devices. Students also learned to derive Beer Lambert Law. The session concluded with students’ queries.

Day2: 14th February 2017

Prof. Edamana Prasad resumed the session with the lecture on Fluorescence Spectroscopy”. He discussed the Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Photoexcitation of organic molecules, Singlet and Triplet excited states, Jablonski Diagram, Absorption and emission Spectra. The session concluded with Q & A Session.

Day 3: 15th February 2017

Prof. Edamana Prasad continued the session with the lecture on Fluorescence Quenching, static and  dynamic reasons for quenching, Electron Transfer and Energy Transfer, Generate multiple ideas for developing a sensor for detecting toxic metal ions using the principles of (i) UV-Vis spectroscopy & (ii) fluorescence spectroscopy. The session concluded with the revision of Day 1, 2 & 3 Session.

The QEEE sessions were very helpful for students as it provided them a platform to learn UV - Visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy and its application on Detection of pollutants in water.
