STC on Classroom Teaching for Soft Skill Development Conducted by NITTTR, Chandigarh

 

18th - 22nd July 2016

   

National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh conducted a one week short term course on "Classroom Teaching for Soft Skill Development” from 18th July to 22nd July 2016 at NITTTR, Chandigarh. Ms. Gurpreet Kaur, Assistant Professor, Management Department from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the STC.

 

Day 1: 18th July 2016

 

The event was inaugurated by Dr. S P Bedi, Professor, Department of Education and Educational Management, NITTTR Chandigarh and Dr. P K Tulsi, Professor & Head, Education and Education Management Department, NITTTR Chandigarh. Dr. S P Bedi stated the objectives and the schedule of the event and initiated the lecture with introduction to Soft Skill Development.

 

Dr. P K Tulsi gave an overview of the following topics that were covered under STC of Classroom Teaching for Soft Skills:

 

1. Communication Skills

2. Team Building

3. Creativity

4. Time Management

5. Learning to Learn

6. Decision Making

7. Problem Solving etc.

 

Mr. Harjinder Singh Cheema, Chairman of Cheema Boiler Limited conducted the session. Cheema Boilers Limited is one of India's premier engineering solutions company serving industry's energy requirements. Mr. Cheema shared his experience with the participants and the success story of Cheema Boiler. He also discussed the expectations of industry from their employees/ newly recruits (technical students).

 

Day 2: 19th July 2016

 

Dr. P K Tulsi initiated the session on the second day with the introduction to Verbal Communication Skills. She explained, “When the trust account is high, communication is easy, instant, and effective.

 

Dr. Tulsi said that the impact of different things on Oral Communication is

 

1. Verbal Communication 7 %

2. Tonal Quality 38%

3. Non Verbal 55%

 

During the session, Dr. Tulsi also discussed DISC Survey. DISC is a behavior assessment tool. DISC means Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Consciences. This theory was then developed into a behavioral assessment tool by Industrial Psychologist Walter Vernon Clark. She gave an exercise on verbal communication and listening to the participants.

 

Second session of the day was conducted by Dr. Sunil Dutt, Professor of Education and Educational Management, NITTTR Chandigarh. He delivered the lecture on Learning to Learn and Instructional Strategies. Dr. Dutt said that Learning to Learn is the ability to pursue and persist in learning and to organize one’s own learning including effective management of time and information, both individually and in group. During the session he focused on Negative and Positive Learning and the stages of Learning (Three stages of Learning).

 

He concluded the four elements of Learning as following:

 

1. Learner

2. Stimulus(Learning Situation)

3. The internal conditions: - Perception, Cognitive, Structure & Self Concept.

4. Response

 

Day 3: 20th July 2016

 

Er. Amandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, Education and Educational Management Department, NITTTR Chandigarh started the session with the brief introduction to Emotional Intelligence Skill. She discussed the past study of Aspiring Minds on Emotional Intelligence conducted during August 2012. She gave a task on self-analysis of Emotional Intelligence to the participants. The task was related to the self-examination of emotional intelligence. Later she shared some videos on emotional intelligence.

 

The session was continued by Dr. T N Thukral, Professor, Education and Education Management Department, NITTTR Chandigarh who explained the Problem Solving Skills & Instructional Strategies. In this session he discussed the process of problem solving.

 

Day 4: 21th July 2016

 

The session on the fourth day commenced with a discussion on Team Building & Decision Making Strategies by Dr. S P Bedi. She stated that Team Building is the process of group of the people to reach a team goal. Dr. Bedi elaborated important points which should be kept in mind during team building in the classroom.

 

She stressed on the Collaborative Learning which refers to an instruction method which involves group of learners working together to solve a problem. She also discussed the Collaborative Learning Techniques.

 

The next session of the day was conducted by Dr. Sunil Dutt. He discussed the Decision Making Skill. Under Decision Making skill, Dr. Dutt covered the types of decisions, and factors that to be affecting the decisions. He explained the Decision Making Process pictorially.

 

Day 5: 22nd July 2016

 

The last day of the STC was dedicated to Time Management Instructional Strategies and Creativity. Er. Amandeep Kaur conducted the first session with the introduction of Time Management (TM). In the session she shared some motivational videos of TM. She stated that effective time management is one of the skills necessary for success of institute as well as in everyday life and in the world of work. The teachers who effectively manage time give their students the best opportunity to learn and to develop personal habits that lead to optimum use of time.

 

Next there is a session on brain storming activity to induce the participants to challenging task of day to day life. She asked them to pen down the productive hours in 24 hours and calculates the effective time. The participants did this initially on the daily basis and then on weekly basis. The effective time wasted and utilized was an eye opener for the participants as teachers.

 

With the completion of the task the session was carried forward by Dr. S P Bedi. She discussed the creative methods of teaching which includes:

 

1. Brainstorming

2. Attribute Listing

3. Nominal Grouping

4. The Delphi Technique

 

At last there is a feedback session. All the participants discussed the pros and cons of the session and shared their thoughts on the STC.
