Comsol Multiphysics 5.1 And Application Builder Workshop

16th September 2015

COMSOL Group had organized “COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS 5.1 AND APPLICATION BUILDER WORKSHOP” on 16th September 2015 at Amity University, Noida. Mr. Nitin Kumar, Assistant Professor of ECE department from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the program.

COMSOL 5.1 is the latest multiphysics tool. Multiphysics treat simulations that involve multiple physical models or multiple simultaneous physical phenomena which is also known as coupling. Coupling was explained by taking the example of an electrical heater. Step wise demo of metallic strip of micrometer dimension as an electrical heater to simulate temperature, stress and electric potential variation was conducted. This provided a clear idea of how to perform simulation in COMSOL 5.1. There are many physical models at work like geometry, electrical potential, surface losses due to joule heating, temperature and Von Mises stress in the glass plate due to thermal expansion.

Mr. Hemant Kumar, Technical Engineer., COMSOL explained that in COMSOL 5.1 there is no limit on number of coupling of models. No prior knowledge of programing is needed, only knowledge of physical model is required. Using graphical user interface (GUI), user can type in non-linear expressions, tables, function calls, etc. He discussed that in some case studies were presented during the workshop where MNCs use COMSOL Multiphysics to improve their products.

Mr. Samrath Aggarwal, Application Engineer, COMSOL described that COMSOL 5.1 works on module system and user can purchase modules according to their simulation need. Basic modules in the field of Electrical Simulation (AC/DC, RF, Wave Optics, Ray Optics, MEMS, Plasma), Mechanical Simulation (Heat Transfer, Structural Mechanics, Non-Linear Structure Materials, Geo-mechanics, Fatigue, Multi-Body Dynamics Modules) and Fluid Simulation (Commutated Fluid Dynamics, Mixer, Microfluidics, Subsurface Flow).

The whole workshop was very informative and a trial version of COMSOL 5.1 with all modules present was distributed among the participants.
