Workshop on “PSO based Optimization Techniques”

26th November 2013

A “Workshop on PSO based Optimization Techniques” was organized on Tuesday, 26th November 2013 at Dronacharya Group Of Institutions Greater Noida by DGI - IEEE Student Chapter. The workshop was conducted by Prof. B. K. Panigrahi, Associate Professor, IIT Delhi.

Prof. B. K. Panigrahi delivered the key lecture on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Techniques. He covered various aspects of particle swarm optimization, particularly its basics, contemporary trends and best practices. He also lucidly explained the established candidate solution standards being followed in the IT industry and also presented a glimpse of future possibilities.

Prof. Panigrahi said that in computer science, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a computational method that optimizes a problem by iteratively trying to improve a candidate solution with regard to a given measure of quality. PSO optimizes a problem by having a population of candidate solutions, here dubbed particles, and moving these particles around in the search-space according to simple mathematical formulae over the particle's position and velocity. Each particle's movement is influenced by its local best known position but, is also guided toward the best known positions in the search-space, which are updated as better positions are found by other particles. This is expected to move the swarm toward the best solutions.

The audience consisting of IEEE, ISTE and CSI Members, guests, faculty members and students critically discussed the topic with the speaker.

PSO is originally attributed to Kennedy, Eberhart and Shi and was first intended for simulatingsocial behavior as a stylized representation of the movement of organisms in a bird flock or fish school. The algorithm was simplified and it was observed to be performing optimization, said Prof. Panigrahi. The book by Kennedy and Eberhart describes many philosophical aspects of PSO and The Workshop came to an end with Vote of Thanks by Dr. Sarika Gupta, IEEE Branch Counselor.
