IITD - NU Joint Cyber Security Workshop
Bharti School of Telecom, IIT Delhi
February 7th - 8th, 2014
 

IIT Delhi in collaboration with University of Nebraska at Omaha organized a joint Cyber Security Workshop at Bharti School of Telecom during 7th - 8th February, 2014. 50 participants who attended this workshop comprised of practitioners from industry, faculty members from engineering colleges, defence personnel, students. Mr. Divyanshu Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering represented Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida in this coveted event.

 

The objective of this workshop was to develop an understanding of the current challenges in the area of cyber security and also to develop a strategy for the future in terms of manpower development in this area.

 

The session was inaugurated by Prof. R. K. Shevgaonkar, Director IITD and Prof. James B. Milliken, President, University of Nebraska. Prof. Shevgaonkar and Prof. Milliken both explained the need of such a collaboration between the two research heavyweights and the amount of research being undertaken actively by both IITD and University of Nebraska on the frontier of Cyber Security. Prof. Shevgaonkar also announced the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Cyber Systems & Information Assurance in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IITD.

 

Prof. B Bhaumik, Head of Department, Electrical Engineering, IITD thanked Prof Shevgaonkar for establishing the COE for Cyber Systems and Information Assurance in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi. She also stressed on the threats emanating from the cyber world and the constant need to find countermeasures against them.

 

Dr. K. D. Nayak, Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO gave some practical scenarios and real life threats experienced by the defence sector through different cyber attacks.

 

Prof. Mathew Dwyera and Prof. Deepak Khazanchi, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Information Science & Technology, NU explained the infrastructure and Cyber Security capabilities available in the University of Nebraska which helps them perform research and also aids them to mitigate the cyber threats faced by the Ministry of Defence.

 

This was followed by a Panel Discussion on Cloud & Network Security. This was an interactive session in which participants and the panelists discussed some critical issues in Cloud & Network Security. The panel comprised of Prof. Chittaranjan Hota, Prof. Abhishek Parakh (NU), Prof. Ranjan Bose (IIT Delhi) and Ms. Shweta Aggarwal, IIT Delhi.

 

This was followed by a session on Critical Infrastructure Security – SCADA by Prof. Robin Gandhi, University of Nebraska at Omaha. He explained techniques to make a business critical infrastructure resistant and immune to cyber attacks. He cited the threats to a SCADA system and how those threats can manipulate the actual working of that system.

 

Prof. Debdeep Mukherjee, IIT Kharagpur explained how to achieve better Hardware Security by optimizing the designs. This was followed by a session on Reverse Engineering by Prof. Bill Mahoney, NU who explained how to reverse engineer a code using IDA PRO.

 

The next session was presided by Prof. Rajat Subhra Chakraborty, IIT Kharagpur on Hardware Trojans who explained the increasing use of such Trojans by attackers to compromise Hardware Security.

 

Prof. Ashok Samal, NU delivered a talk on Hacktivism and ways to counter it. Prof. Witty, NU explained how to make mobile apps more secure. He also explained how malicious apps constantly keep on leaking data from a users mobile.

 

The workshop came to an end with a report on Cyber security research and next steps in IITD-NU partnership.
