QEEE Session on “GEAR : Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery / Theory of Machines”

9th, 14th and 20th September 2016

QEEE Session on “GEAR: Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery / Theory of Machines” was organized by IIT Madras under D2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida during 9th, 14th and 20th September 2016. The session was conducted by Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Professor, IIT Madras. 3rd and 4th Year Mechanical Department Students attended the session. The session was coordinated by Mr. Brijesh Verma, Assistant Professor (ME), DGI, Greater Noida.

The course pack was a part of quality enhancement in education, an open learning platform provided exclusively by IIT - Madras. It was a complete package of comprehensive study materials which includes of Video Lectures, PowerPoint Slides and PDF Documents. It also included quiz, proctored quiz and assignment for practice of students. The course was conducted in three sessions as follows:

Day 1: 9th September 2016

First session started with a detailed explanation of applications and uses of gear in different field e.g. Automobile, Crane and various machinery in industries. Prof. Abhijit Sarkar explained the motion of gear and compared it well with the rolling motion of friction disks. Later he discussed the geometry and nomenclature of gear tooth and its involute profile.

Day 2: 14th September 2016

The next session commenced with the explanation of Instantaneous Center and Law of Gearing - According to this law the angular velocity ratio of all gears of a meshed gear system must remain constant also the common normal at the point of contact must pass through the pitch point. Prof. Sarkar explained involute profile of gear tooth. The involute gear profile is the most commonly used system for gearing today. In this type of gear, the profiles of the teeth are involutes of a circle. He also discussed pressure angle and effect of change of center distance between gears for involute profile of teeth. He discussed base circle and its relationship with tooth geometry.

Day 3: 20th September 2016

In the last session Prof. Sarkar elaborated advantages of involute profile of teeth over other profiles of teeth like running is smooth in involute gear whereas in other gear running is less smooth. There is flexibility during the assembly and larger tolerance may be permitted in involute gear whereas exact centre distance is necessary to transmit constant velocity ratio in other gears. He then discussed Contact Ratio, Length of Path of Contact and Undercutting. At the end of the session, he explained various gear train for getting different Gear Ratio.

Each session was very interactive. Prof. Sarkar provided a very impressive introduction and comprehensive outlook about gear and its application. DGI students their cleared their concepts of gear geometry, gear train and its application during Q & A Session.

The entire three day session with Prof. Abhijit Sarkar was very knowledgeable and informative which indeed helped students as well as faculty members to broaden the horizon of their understanding about gear and its uses.
