STC ON “MATERIALS AND PROCESSES FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS”

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

6th to 10th June 2016

A Short Term Course (STC) on “MATERIALS AND PROCESSES FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS” was organized by IIT, Roorkee during 6th – 10th June 2016. Mr. Gaurav Siwal from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended in the STC.

The objective of the course was to provide the knowledge of materials like alloys, composites and ceramics for higher temperature applications and their processes.

Day 1: 6th June 2016

Dr. B. V. Manoj Kumar and Dr. V. V. Dabhade from Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Roorkee welcomed the participants and inaugurated the course. They gave a brief introduction and objective of the STC.

Prof. S. K. Nath from Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering conducted the session on “Introduction to High Temperature Materials”. He discussed various applications like aerospace, thermal plants, boilers and turbines where materials are exposed to high working temperatures. High temperature for a material can be defined as 0.5 Tm or higher, Where Tm is the melting temperature of the material.

In second session, Prof. Nath discussed on “High Temperature Strengthening Mechanism and Creep”. He discussed the concept of creep failure and experimental setup to plot creep curve for a material. He also discussed various heat treatment processes for strengthening of materials.

Dr. V. V. Dabhade conducted the session on “Powder Metallurgical Processing of High Temperature Materials”. He discussed the concept of powder metallurgy, powder formation methods, ball milling process and sintering process.

Prof. Ujjwal Prakash, IIT Roorkee conducted the session on “Oxide Dispersion Strengthening (ODS) Steels” where he discussed concept of dispersion of oxides for improving the mechanical properties of steels.

Day 2: 7th June 2016

Prof. Prakash continued the second day of the STC on “Intermetallics” in which he discussed properties of intermetallics, its advantages and disadvantages. He discussed process techniques of Fe - Al, Ni - Al and Ti - Al system of intermetallics.

Second session was conducted by Prof. G. P. Chaudhari, IIT Roorkee on “High Temperature Degradation”. He discussed degradations like forming of oxide layer, pores and scales on material surface and Techniques to improve such degradations.

Prof. B. V. Manoj Kumar conducted the session on “Ceramic Composites for High Temperature Applications” where he discussed the basic definition of ceramic, classification of ceramics, structural ceramics and application in refractories, cutting tools, heat engines and aerospace.

Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh from National Physical Laboratory (NPL), New Delhi conducted the session on “Carbon - Carbon Composites”. He discussed polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites and ceramic matrix composites. Carbon based reinforcement materials like carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes and graphene.

Day 3: 8th June 2016

Dr. Tarasankar Mahata from BARC, Mumbai conducted the session on “Materials and fabrication techniques of oxide ceramic based high temperature energy conversion devices - solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC)”. He also discussed Hydrogen economy and components of cell.

Continuing the session Dr. Mahata discussed “Processing of Non - oxide Ceramics through Hot Pressing”. He discussed processing of boride and carbide ceramics, powder preparation and sintering processes like pressure assisted sintering, liquid phase assisted sintering and reaction assisted sintering.

Retd. Prof Satya Prakash from IIT Roorkee conducted a session on “Protective coating for high temperature application”. He discussed the concept of coating, deposition techniques, thermal spray techniques, applications at high temperature, wear application of Thermal spray coating, and surface modification of coating.

Prof. B. S. S. Daniel from IIT Roorkee conducted a session on “Nickel Based Super Alloys”. He discussed properties of super alloys, multiphase nickel based intermetallic alloys, mechanical properties, microstructure and application of nickel based super alloys. He discussed various Ni based super alloys like Nimonic 115, MARM200, SRR99 and CMSX-4.

Day 4: 9th June 2016

Prof. G. P. Chaudhari conducted a session on “Testing and Characterization Techniques” where he discussed phenomenological description of creep, difference between constant load and constant stress creep test, Thermogravimetry, X - Ray Diffractometer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM).

Prof. P. K. Ghosh, IIT Roorkee conducted a session on “Fatigue and Fracture of Materials” where he discussed fatigue failure, high temperature fatigue failure, probability of fatigue failure, cumulative fatigue damage and application of fracture mechanism.

In last session of the day, participants were taken for a visit to laboratories having processing facilities. Participants were shown Horizontal and Vertical Ball Milling Machine, DC Supply Based Sintering Machine and Mechanical - Thermal Testing facility.

Day 5: 10th June 2016

On the last day of the STC the participants were taken for a visit to laboratories having characterization facilities. Where participants were shown Creep Testing Machine, X - ray Diffraction Machine and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

During Valedictory Session, the coordinators from IIT Roorkee, gave their views and thanked all the participants. Participants from various colleges also congratulated organizers for successful completion of the course and gave their feedback and suggestions. At last certificates were distributed to all the participants. It was very valuable and educative course for all the participants.
