Virtual Labs Workshop

Bharti School of Telecom, IIT Delhi

6th September, 2014

Shivangi Maheshwari, Assistant Professor, Department of  Mechanical Engineering , Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the Virtual Labs Workshop conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi on 6th September 2014. The workshop was conducted at Bharti School of Telecom, IIT Delhi. The resource person, Prof. Ranjan Bose, Electrical Department, IIT Delhi highlighted the concept of Virtual labs and its national impact.

Virtual Labs are an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Mission on Education through ICT. It is a powerful tool for distance learning and experimentation that allows learner to share knowledge through data, voice, video, tools, and many other internet resources. It provides a suitable environment to extend, improve, integrate, refine, and assist the learning and experimentation process of many engineering subjects in particulars, thus contributing to an increase of the effectiveness of scientific research and widening the use of rare and costly equipments.

1- To provide remote-access to Labs in various disciplines of Science and Engineering. These Virtual Labs would cater to students at the undergraduate level, post graduate level as well as to research scholars.

2- To enthuse students to conduct experiments by arousing their curiosity. This would help them in learning basic and advanced concepts through remote experimentation.

3- To provide a complete Learning Management System around the Virtual Labs where the students can avail the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures, animated demonstrations and self - evaluation.

4- To share costly equipment and resources otherwise available to limited number of users due to constraints on time and geographical distance.

After tea break, Prof. Bose provided the audience with complete information about Virtual lab, right from setting it up at college and working on it. A dedicated team was available during the workshop to help the participants with the queries. Later on the participants were taken to Virtual lab for hands on practice.

The demonstration on how to work with virtual labs helped participants to understand the promising aspect for students’ future. The Virtual labs can provide a complete education to students through animations, video lectures and all other internet resources. With this kind of innovative learning environment students would feel encouraged to learn more effectively. Virtual labs could therefore provide a good complement to traditional lab resources.
