Guest Lecture on ‘Evolution of Manufacturing’

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a Guest Lecture on Evolution of Manufacturing’ on 8th August, 2014. Resource person for the guest lecture was Dr. A.K. Digalwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, BITS Pilani

 

Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Murali, Director, DGI, faculty members of Mechanical Engineering Department and 60 students of II year attended the lecture.

 

The event began with the floral welcome of Dr. Digalwar by Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Murali Director, DGI Greater Noida.

 

During welcome speech Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Murali advised students to take advantage of the guest lecture  in the form of getting more information on  presenting manufacturing scenario in industry. He also advised student to take a note of important aspect of the guest lecture.

 

Dr. Digalwar began the session by explaining the history and various phases of manufacturing. Dr. Digalwar put an emphasis on explaining the Evolution of Production Paradigm with respect to the Auto Industry. He discussed the following phases

 

1- Crafts Production of Cars (~1850),

2- Mass Production System (~1913),

3- Flexible Production System (~1980),

4- Mass Customization & Personalization (~2000) 

5- Sustainable Production (2020).

 

 

Discussion was held on Ford Mass Production System (which introduced the concept of vertical integration & moving assembly line). The concept of interchangeability was discussed with practical examples and Emergence of Modern Mass Production System (which led to the concept of varieties). Toyota Production System that utilizes JIT philosophy and 5S concept was also discussed. 

 

He also discussed about the concept of Interchangeability, Lean Manufacturing and JIT .

 

In the end an interactive session was held where Dr. Digalwar answered the questions raised by the students. During this session students’ queries related to Interchangeability and Lean Manufacturing were answered with real life examples.

 

Dr. Digalwar was presented with a memento by Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Murali Director, DGI, Gr.Noida for his valuable contribution in conducting the awareness session.
