On

12th September 2014

Mechanical Engineering Department, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized an Industrial trip to “Maruti Suzuki Pvt. Ltd.”, Gurgaon on 12th September 2014. The Industrial Visits helps the students to bridge the gap between classroom and the real working world. Group of 19 students and faculty member Ms Komal Madan visited the plant.

The objective of the visit was to broaden the understanding of students in the structure of vehicle chassis, engines steering, suspension, braking, transmission systems and auxiliary systems. The Industrial visit provided remarkable experience where students got chance to see high-tech robotic technology and automation in different stages of manufacturing.

Maruti Suzuki Pvt. Ltd. (formerly Maruti Udyog Ltd.) was established as Government Company in February 1981 with Maruti 800, India’s first affordable World-class car rolled off in the year 1983. Maruti Suzuki is the highest car manufacturer in Asia outside Japan and Korea. They have four plants, three located at Palam Gurgaon Road, Gurgaon, Haryana and one located at Manesar Industrial Town, Gurgaon, Haryana.

The process of making of Maruti cars is totally automated and is internationally designed. The visit commenced with an enlightening video on the history and business portfolio of Maruti Suzuki Pvt. Ltd., introduced by Mr. V. K. Malhotra.(Manager, Public Relation).

Mr. V. K. Malhotra (Manager, Public Relation), briefed the students about the plant stating , Maruti Suzuki , gurgaon plant has a sprawling campus of 300 acres with state of art manufacturing facility in the heart of Gurgaon city. It has a flexible assembly line manufacturing which has helped them improve their productivity. Maruti Suzuki is a leader in introducing various path breaking innovations offering a wide range of 14 models including the premium luxury sedan KIzashi. It has three fully integrated manufacturing facility which is equipped with 150 robots, out of which 71 have been developed in-house. All three plants have an installed capacity of 350,000 vehicles annually but productivity improvements have enabled it to manufacture 900,000 vehicles annually.

The manufacturing process comprises 6 basic steps:

1. Blanking - Blanking is nothing but cutting the sheet into desired dimension.

2. Pressing - Pressing or Stamping is done in order to create different structure and holes as per the required dimensions like making doors, window, gates etc

3. Welding - In welding shop, doors and lower portions were welded in order to get attached to the engine.

4. Painting - Cathode electron deposit painting is done on the body after removing the dust and oil.

5. Assembling - Assembling is process in which with the help of movable robots, the car body is sent to the assembly shop where engines are fixed which requires more than 500 parts altogether.

6. Inspection - Complete fitted car is sent for inspection. Inspection section contains various parameters for testing the car which included speed, brake, fuel, vibration, leakage etc.

Overall it was highly interactive and learning visit for the students on the concepts related to production and operations in a large manufacturing plant, as each process was not only demonstrated but explained in detail. Students cleared all their queries and received an interactive exposure. The visit was an informative experience satisfying the curiosity of engineering students where they could relate theoretical knowledge of the subjects to the practical application in industry.
