VIRTUAL LABS WORKSHOP

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - DELHI

22ND AUGUST 2015

Virtual Labs Workshop was organized on 22nd August 2015 at Indian Institute of Technology- Delhi (IITD). Virtual Labs is an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Mission on Education in Information & Communication Technology.

Mr. Nitin Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Ms. Priyanka Kaushal and Dr. Neeraj Bala, Assistant Professors, Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities and Ms. Priyanka, Lab Instructor, Department of Mechanical Engineering from Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida attended the workshop.

The program started with the presentation on “Role of Nodal Center” which was delivered by Prof. Rajan Bose (Electrical) IIT, Delhi. He explained the importance of virtualization of the engineering labs to fulfill the national mission on education. He also explained the role of nodal centers in promoting and regular reviewing of the contents of the Virtual Labs. More than 250 colleges are nodal center for Virtual Labs. Currently there are 17 labs of ECE and 22 labs of EEE subjects available on Virtual Labs website (www.vlab.co.in). Mapping of labs according to different universities syllabus is underway. Some downloadable virtual labs will be available on Virtual Labs site in the near future.

Dr. Suresh Bhalla, Associate Professor, (Civil) IIT, Delhi explained the difference between Simulation based lab, Measurement based lab and Remote triggered lab. For the remote triggered lab, only one person at a time can perform experiments. Hence every user has to book a time slot to perform experiments. Initially majority of labs were remote triggered but now Virtual Labs are moving toward simulation based lab as large number of users can perform experiment simultaneously. He demonstrated the Piezo-Material labs and VPro as a substitute to using LabView.

Mr. Sanjeev Soni explained about the Computer Science labs and also demonstrated the Data Structure lab experiment on “BFS & DFS of Tree Structure”. He informed that every lab has a feedback link and the queries will be reverted within 24 hours. Mr. Nitish Aggarwal explained about, the Electronics & Communication labs and also demonstrated the Basic Electronics lab. Mr. M. K. Kaushik distributed the participation certificates at the end of workshop.

A tour was also organized of the remote triggered Antenna lab. There the participants got to see the many advanced experiments of Antenna. A demonstration of how user gets physical access of remote triggered equipment from internet and how to book time slot for these experiments was given.

The whole workshop was very informative. Participants learnt a lot about Virtual Labs and will be using these facilities for research work and also guide students to use Virtual Labs facilities.
