Dr. Didar Singh welcomed the panel members, all guests and conveyed his deep appreciation to the participants of the debate competition. He singularly mentioned the prize winners and greatly applauded their zeal and enthusiasm. 26th April is being celebrated as the world IPR day and he paid tributes to the achievements of India in this esoteric area. He stated that the ideas acquired from the youth and young minds have found space in the National Planning and Strategy domain of IP.The anti-piracy cell is doing a yeoman’s job in restricting false practices and flourishing of spurious products. The country needs a strong IP strategy and is looking up to the students at college level to contribute substantially for gainful outcome. Shri Chaitanya Prasad traced the origin of World IP day which started in 1970. IP system drives technological innovations and in this aspect FICCI, DIPP and numerous associations are significantly contributing. He complimented the winners of Debate competition and held them as flag bearers for helping in creating awareness of IP in young minds and ushering a new era.

Shri Saurabh Chandra emphasized that Innovation has to be initiated in class rooms. It has to be fostered, incentivized and grown at school and college level. He mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of IPR has been established at Nagpur in 2012 which shall train people in this field and act as a Think Tank. The winners of the debate competition were felicitated by the panel members. Sayani Chakraborty received a glittering trophy and a cash prize of Rs 3100/-. Harshit Pundhir received a similar trophy and a cash prize of Rs 2100/-

The conference commenced with session on “Nurturing Innovation for Socio Economic Growth” followed by a panel discussion, chaired by Dr. K. S. Kardam, Joint Controller of Patents & Designs, IP Office. The other sessions were on “Violation of IP Rights- Threat to National Security & Economy” and “IP Monetization & Financing- Unlocking the potential of Valuable assets”.

The focus of discussions was on “IPR protection and exploration of opportunities”. IP creation is a process for potential of marketing. One should keep on innovating new technologies and not only concentrate on profits and acquiring wealth. Incremental innovations have succeeded in India and Indian Legislation on IP is very clear. The scientific community is doing a commendable job but one should not be content with only publishing papers and creating patents. The end result must be commercialization. Awareness of IPR was essential and to the dismay of all this was the Achilles heel. Innovation and Invention was dealt in great detail. Innovation is a deliberate process. It should be clearly understood that patents do not create monopoly whereas markets do. However, since 2005 India has taken a quantum leap in the field of IPR. Shri Parthasarthy, Partner, Deloitte (India) in his Business Confidence Report brought out that there has been a 50 % increase in Patent filing, 50 % increase in design and 60 % increase in trademarks since 2005 in our country. ALL were of the opinion that the patent processing form 27 needs simplification.

The valedictory address was rendered by Mr. Anil Rajput, Chairman, FICCI CASCADE & Sr.VP Corporate affairs, ITC Ltd.
