Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida
FDP on Embedded System with Focus on Intel Atom Processor
UPTU Noida Campus

Ms. Prerna Singh, Mr. Manoj Yadav and Mr. Sunil Kumar working as Assistant Professor in Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida, were delegated to UPTU, Noida Campus to attend the Intel® College Excellence Program (ICEP) on Embedded System with Focus on Intel Atom Processor held during 9th-11th December 2013. The programme was headed by Mr. Sai Nath and Mr. Shiva Prasad Yadav Trainers from Intel, Bangalore.

Necessity is the mother of invention and embedded systems are inventions that were fuelled by the idea of making pre-programs to perform a dedicated narrow range of functions as part of large systems. Usually with minimal end user interactions, the 'giant leap technology' in future embedded systems is based on instruction-oriented design but not on design-oriented instructions. Embedded systems and real time operating systems (RTOS) are fast achieving ubiquity, blurring the lines between science fiction and hard reality.

Day One

9th December 2013 started with an introduction to embedded systems followed by discussion on basics of Intel Atom Kit, available interfaces and board details. Mr. Sainath focused on Intel Atom architecture as compared to IA32 systems. He said Embedded systems are usually low cost and are easily available off the shelf for most applications. Major areas of development in embedded System are standard run-time platforms like java, which enabled their use in myriad ways that were unimaginable in the past. A brief introduction to GNU (GNU’s Not Unix)/ Linux based system and hands on session on command line tools and use of command shell in Linux was conducted.

Next lecture was taken by Mr. Shiva Prasad Yadav on assembly language on Linux platform with an introduction to NASM assembler, C programming on Linux platform, accessing Linux system calls from assembly language and call of assembly language subroutines through C. Session continued with hands on practice with peripheral boards, accessing on-board GPIO with simple peripheral boards. The first day session was concluded with an open discussion and queries from the participants .

Day Two

10th December 2013 started with a discussion on IA32 architecture followed by a hands on session on use of GNU tools for system design and development by Mr. Shiva Prasad. He continued the day with hands on session with peripheral boards which included interface through serial port and demonstration on different methods of data access. There was a discussion on embedded system development, design and use of subsystems for an embedded system. Later there was a case study demonstration and discussion on end to end application development on Intel Atom Kit. The second day session also ended with an open discussion and feedback on the workshop from the participants.

Day Three

The concluding day, 11th December 2013 focused on demonstration and discussion on Intel Atom based design examples followed by demonstration on accessing the networking capabilities of the system through socket programming, simple client server application and browser for data display. There was a discussion on case studies and domains suitable for taking up projects for Intel Atom based systems. Later brief discussion on image processing and its relevant applications took place. Finally the session ended with different outcomes and feedback from the participants.

Mr. Sai Nath said that one day Embedded Systems can also make driver-less vehicle control a reality.

Intel Certification exam was conducted at the end of third day to test the skill acquired by the participants.
